Senior Engineer - Maintenance & Operations

Type: Permanent, Full Time, 37 hours per week

The Opportunity

Essex Highways manages one of the largest highway networks in the country, including 5,000 miles of roads and footways. The role involves delivering a safe, sustainable highway network through asset management, scheme identification, delivery, and maintenance. The Senior Engineer will lead a team, act as a technical expert, and communicate effectively with various stakeholders.

Accountabilities

• Develop policies, plans, and procedures to meet community and economic goals, incorporating technological advances.
• Manage the planning, design, delivery, and monitoring of highway works and services.
• Provide technical leadership and manage staff within the highway service team.
• Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to quality standards.
• Support health, safety, environment, and quality management systems.
• Advise public officials and the community on highway matters.
• Prepare reports and represent the organization at meetings and inquiries.

The Experience You Will Bring

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field, with professional membership (e.g., ICE, IHT, IHIE).
• Post-qualification experience in highways/transportation and project management.
• Extensive knowledge of highway legislation, standards, and safety regulations.
• Experience managing highway schemes and statutory processes.
• Excellent communication and leadership skills.
• Valid driving license and access to a vehicle or ability to meet mobility needs.
