Job summary

Fawkes & Reece London seeks an experienced Freelance Senior Engineer to join a Civils Framework at Gatwick Airport. You will coordinate site engineering activities, oversee setting-out and surveying, and ensure works meet drawings, specifications, and programme requirements.

Working on a major airport civils framework, you will support the site teams, review technical documentation, drive quality assurance and maintain safe, efficient delivery of infrastructure works on site.

Qualifications

• Experience as a Senior Engineer in civil engineering or infrastructure projects.
• Strong setting-out and surveying skills.
• Ability to interpret construction drawings and technical specifications.

Responsibilities

• Manage day-to-day site engineering activities across civil works.
• Oversee setting out, surveying and dimensional control against drawings.
• Review construction drawings and identify engineering issues.
• Support Site Engineers and provide technical guidance.
• Liaise with site management, subcontractors and design teams to resolve queries.
• Ensure QA procedures, inspections and as-built documentation are followed.
• Monitor progress against programme and flag delays or challenges.
• Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental and quality requirements.
• Maintain accurate survey records and site documentation.

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Freelance Senior Engineer to join a civils framework at Gatwick Airport. This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong and proactive Senior Engineer with a solid background in civil engineering and infrastructure projects.

The successful candidate will play a key role in coordinating engineering activities, overseeing setting‑out operations and ensuring construction works are delivered safely, accurately and in accordance with project specifications, drawings and programme requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and coordinate day‑to‑day site engineering activities across civil engineering and infrastructure works.
• Oversee setting out, surveying and dimensional control to ensure works are delivered in line with approved drawings and specifications.
• Review construction drawings, technical documentation and design information, identifying and resolving engineering issues.
• Support and coordinate Site Engineers, providing technical guidance and ensuring high standards of engineering delivery.
• Liaise with site management, subcontractors, design teams and other stakeholders to maintain progress and resolve technical queries.
• Ensure quality assurance procedures are followed, including inspections, ITPs, quality records and as‑built documentation.
• Monitor engineering progress against the construction programme and help identify potential delays or technical challenges.
• Ensure all works comply with health, safety, environmental and quality requirements.
• Maintain accurate survey records, site documentation and engineering reports.
• Assist with planning upcoming works, coordinating resources and ensuring engineering requirements are met.

Requirements

• Proven experience in a Senior Engineer role within civil engineering or infrastructure projects.
• Strong setting‑out and surveying skills.
• Ability to interpret construction drawings and technical specifications.
• Experience managing engineering activities and supporting site teams.
• Strong understanding of quality assurance, site documentation and construction procedures.
• Excellent communication, coordination and problem‑solving skills.
• A proactive approach with the ability to work effectively in a demanding site environment.
• Previous experience on major infrastructure or airport projects would be advantageous.
