Job summary

ALTEN is recruiting an Embedded Software Engineer to develop complex, safety‑critical embedded software for defence‑related systems. The role is hands‑on and on‑site in Scotland, with 3–4 days on site weekly and 5+ years of experience. Candidates should be eligible for UK SC clearance.

You will design, develop, and integrate software with systems and hardware teams, adhering to DO‑178C and MISRA C/C++. Agile methods, Jira/Confluence usage, and strong problem‑solving are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline; or relevant technical military background with equivalent hands-on experience.
• Must be eligible for or already hold UK Security Clearance (SC).
• Experience with safety-critical development standards (e.g. DO-178C, MISRA C/C++).
• Experience in Agile teams, using Jira/Confluence and Git-based version control.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain embedded C++ software for complex, safety‑critical systems.
• Apply structured/model‑based design to support scalable architectures.
• Collaborate with systems and hardware engineers to integrate software onto target platforms.
• Ensure compliance with safety and coding standards such as DO‑178C and MISRA C/C++.
• Support system integration, verification, and validation activities in lab environments.
• Contribute to delivery within an Agile development framework.
