Job summary

X4 Technology is seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer for a hybrid role in Southampton, combining on-site and remote work two days per week. You will develop and maintain embedded software in C/C++, design and test software for high‑reliability systems, and collaborate with hardware, FPGA and systems teams across the full lifecycle.

The position offers up to £75,000 with pension, private healthcare, employee shares, and benefits, reflecting experience in defence, aerospace or automotive

Qualifications

• Experience in embedded software development across C/C++ in Linux environments.
• Strong understanding of OO design, SOLID principles and patterns.
• Proven ability to develop and test software across the full lifecycle.

Senior Embedded Software Engineer | Hybrid Southampton (2 days per week WFH) | Up to £75,000

A globally leading client has an opportunity for an experienced Embedded Software Engineer to join an innovative engineering team developing cutting‑edge embedded software for high‑reliability systems.

This is a hybrid working position with three days per week required onsite at the Southampton based innovation centre. What makes this position unique is because the client have soo much work across the embedded stack (from low level C code to multi‑threaded higher level OS based C++), they can tailor the work and position to you!

Salary: Up to £75,000 (with industry leading benefits - 7% pension, Bupa, Shares, 1 day holiday increase per year)

You’ll be working on:

• Developing and maintaining embedded software in C/C++
• Designing, testing, and integrating software for complex embedded systems
• Working across the full software development lifecycle
• Collaborating with hardware, FPGA, and systems engineering teams
• Building robust, high‑performance software for advanced engineering applications

We’re looking for engineers with experience in:

• Embedded Software Development
• C++ and Linux environments
• Object‑Oriented Design (OOD), SOLID principles, and design patterns
• Unit testing and modern software development practices
• Communication protocols such as CAN, RS232/RS422, UDP, TCP/IP OR equivalent
• Due to security access you must have been in the U.K. for at least five years
• MATLAB/Simulink
• OpenGL or Vulkan
• CUDA or OpenCL
• FPGA or HDL exposure
• Video processing or machine learning
• Experience within defence, aerospace, automotive, or other high‑reliability industries
