Job summary

SPT Labtech in Melbourn near Cambridge is seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer - Robotics. You will design, develop and maintain embedded C++ firmware for ARM Cortex-MMCUs powering laboratory instruments, with a focus on motor and actuator control, real-time sensing and robust diagnostics.

You will collaborate with electronics and software teams in a lab setting, contribute to system architecture, and shape firmware across modules, CAN and Ethernet interfaces, and PC-side C#/.NET

Qualifications

• Solid commercial embedded software/firmware experience.
• Strong, hands-on C/C++ on ARM microcontrollers.
• Experience defining module boundaries and interfaces between components.
• Hands-on experience implementing motor and actuator control in production hardware.
• Experience integrating third-party or OEM hardware modules.
• CAN, Ethernet, UART, SPI, I2C, and GPIO familiarity.
• Experience with C# .NET for PC-side code.
• Exposure to RTOS and embedded debugging tools.
• Reliability-focused with fault detection, diagnostics and recovery.
• Experience with unit testing, CI and Git.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain embedded software in C++ for ARM Cortex-M MCUs.
• Implement motor and actuator control across open-loop, closed-loop and hybrid schemes.
• Integrate modules over CAN and Ethernet; write device drivers.
• Shape firmware architecture and interfaces between components.
• Contribute to PC-side C# .NET code for device communication.
• Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior engineers.
• Troubleshoot and debug embedded systems and hardware interfaces.
• Produce clear technical documentation: specs, designs, architecture.
