Job summary

Cellular Origins in Cambridge, England, is seeking a Senior Firmware Engineer to own firmware development for core technology, from requirements through production. You will work with electronics, mechanical, automation, software engineers and biologists to deliver robust firmware across the system.

You will write high-quality C/C++ for STM32, design automated tests, and contribute to CI workflows while debugging complex embedded systems on real hardware.

Qualifications

• A strong track record delivering embedded systems with ownership and pragmatic decisions.
• Extensive firmware experience in C/C++ on ARM microcontrollers, ideally STM32.
• Experience developing automated tests for embedded systems within CI.
• Ability to debug hardware and software end-to-end across disciplines.
• Ability to interpret schematics/datasheets and inform design decisions.
• Collaborative, entrepreneurial approach to problem solving with diverse teams.

Responsibilities

• Own firmware development from requirements to production support.
• Write and review C for ARM microcontrollers (STM32).
• Design and maintain automated tests for embedded firmware and CI workflows.
• Translate system needs into firmware requirements with cross-disciplinary teams.
• Make technical decisions balancing rigour, maintainability and speed; review peers.
• Debug embedded-system issues with probes, scopes, meters and logic analyzers.
• Use Linux-based tools and development environments daily.
• Support or develop custom test equipment for internal use.
• Use Python, C#, or Java to build supporting tools and GUIs.
• Occasionally modify electronics prototypes with electronics engineers.
• Develop hard real-time algorithms for motion control and sensing.
• Use Docker for reliable dev/test environments.
• Contribute to embedded Linux interfaces with firmware.
