In this hybrid role, you will spend approximately 2–3 days a week on-site in Teddington, and 2–3 days working remotely. We value your work-life balance and are open to discussing flexible or part-time working arrangements to accommodate your needs.

As our Senior Electronics Engineer, you will provide specialist expertise in instrumentation and automation systems design, while being responsible for ensuring compliance with legislation and standards of products provided by NPL. Your work will have a tangible impact on our business and the UK as a whole. You will collaborate with a team of professionals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, celebrating the unique contributions everyone brings.

As a senior team member, you will supervise less experienced colleagues, sharing your knowledge and motivating them to improve. As an expert in your field, you will provide everyday design solution advice and offer consultancy services across the department as needed.

What you’ll be doing:

  1. Identifying and assisting in capturing customer requirements
  2. Designing automation, instrumentation, and safety systems and products
  3. Transferring requirements into designs and specifications
  4. Installing, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning automation systems
  5. Sourcing and testing instrumentation to prove suitability for applications
  6. Preparing design risk assessments
  7. Issuing electrical wiring and interconnection drawings using CAD
  8. Managing and maintaining system documentation
  9. Checking designs and documentation for correctness and compliance with standards
  10. Working with suitable suppliers of equipment, services, and materials

Please note, this role is known internally as 'Senior Design Engineer'.

About You

We believe that diversity and unique perspectives are key to the success of our engineering projects. For this role, we particularly encourage applications from candidates underrepresented in STEM disciplines, including women, disabled individuals, black, Asian, and minority ethnic candidates, as well as Armed Forces service leavers transitioning into the civilian workforce.

What you can bring to the role, skills and experience in:

  1. Designing electrical automation, instrumentation, and safety systems
  2. Small Signal Electronics
  3. Microcontrollers
  4. Prototype tests and validation
  5. Creating and interpreting electrical schematics
  6. Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Design
  7. Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) Design
  8. Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) Design
  9. Digital Signal Processors (DSP) Design
  10. Sizing protection components and cables
  11. BSc degree in Electrical, Electronic, or Control Engineering or equivalent experience

We would also welcome the following:

  • Experience applying electrical safety standards (BS/EN 61010-1)

If it sounds like you would be a good fit, we look forward to hearing from you. In return, we will provide an attractive salary + benefits package and the chance to join a passionate and welcoming team.

Note: We actively recruit candidates from all backgrounds. However, due to the nature of our work, specific departments may have additional nationality, residency, and security requirements. You may be asked about this during the recruitment process. To work at NPL, you will need to obtain BPSS security clearance.
