Job summary

Progressive is seeking an experienced Senior EC&I Engineer to support safety-critical nuclear projects from Warrington with a hybrid working arrangement. You will develop EC&I design packages, ensure compliance with functional safety standards, and work closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver robust safety-related solutions.

The role requires a strong background in Electrical, Control & Instrumentation engineering and functional safety, including SIL activities and IEC 61508/61511

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical/EC&I Engineering required.
• Chartered Engineer status or working towards registration preferred.
• Experience in nuclear or other highly regulated industries is desirable.
• Knowledge of IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 Functional Safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Deliver EC&I engineering and design activities for safety-critical projects.
• Develop/review EC&I design docs, specs, calculations, and reports.
• Support safety-related control and instrumentation system implementations.
• Contribute to Functional Safety lifecycle activities and SIL assessments.
• Coordinate with Safety Case, Systems Engineering, Process and Electrical teams.
• Participate in hazard analyses, risk assessments, and design reviews.
• Assist with verification, testing, and commissioning support where required.
• Ensure deliverables meet schedules, quality, and regulatory standards.

Senior EC&I Engineer
Location: Warrington / Hybrid Working
Security Clearance: UK BPSS (must be eligible to obtain and maintain clearance)
Industry: Nuclear / Highly Regulated Environment (Nuclear experience preferred)

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior EC&I Engineer to support the delivery of safety-critical projects within a highly regulated environment. This role is ideal for an engineer with a strong background in Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (EC&I) Engineering and Functional Safety, looking to contribute to complex nuclear programmes.

You will be responsible for the development and delivery of EC&I design packages, supporting the implementation of safety-related systems and working closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure compliance with functional safety standards, regulatory requirements, and project objectives.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver EC&I engineering and design activities across safety-critical projects.
• Develop and review EC&I design documentation, including specifications, calculations, reports, and design packages.
• Support the design and implementation of safety-related control and instrumentation systems.
• Contribute to Functional Safety lifecycle activities in accordance with project and regulatory requirements.
• Undertake SIL assessments, verification activities, and associated documentation.
• Work closely with Safety Case, Systems Engineering, Process, and Electrical teams to develop compliant engineering solutions.
• Participate in hazard identification studies, risk assessments, and design reviews.
• Support verification, validation, testing, and commissioning activities where required.
• Ensure engineering deliverables are completed in line with project schedules, quality requirements, and applicable standards.
• Assist with technical problem-solving and provide engineering support throughout the project lifecycle.
• Experience delivering EC&I design and engineering solutions within the nuclear sector or another highly regulated industry such as defence, energy, oil & gas, pharmaceutical, or rail.
• Good understanding of safety-related control and instrumentation systems.
• Working knowledge of IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 Functional Safety standards.
• Experience supporting SIL determination, verification, or assessment activities.
• Familiarity with the Functional Safety lifecycle and engineering assurance processes.
• Experience producing and reviewing technical engineering documentation.
• Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Eligible for UK BPSS clearance.
• Previous experience on nuclear new-build, decommissioning, defence nuclear, or major infrastructure projects.
• Experience working alongside Safety Case teams.
• Knowledge of PLC-based control systems and instrumentation design.
• Experience supporting commissioning and testing activities.
• Chartered Engineer status or working towards professional registration.
• Functional Safety qualifications would be advantageous.

Qualifications

• Degree, HNC, or HND in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Relevant industry certifications and professional memberships are desirable.
