Job summary

Amey Consulting is seeking a Senior Drainage Engineer to lead the design and delivery of highways drainage projects within the Highways account, applying Causeway Flow where possible.

You will supervise junior staff, manage budgets, and ensure compliance with DMRB and CDM, while contributing to bid activities and client liaison across UK offices. Flexible hybrid working is available.

Senior Drainage Engineer

The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Drainage Engineer to join our Consulting Highways team. National Highways, formerly Highways England, has named Amey Consulting as a Design partner to support the delivery of the largest and most comprehensive renewals programme ever launched. The £3.6bn Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF) enables National Highways to procure Design and Construction services across the Strategic Road Network for six years.

The role

As a Senior Drainage Engineer you will manage the design and delivery of projects on the Highways account, covering a range of small, medium and occasionally large projects. The role focuses on drainage design using Causeway Flow and on developing the in‑house drainage team’s capabilities. Experience with Causeway Flow is highly preferable.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team to produce technically sound highways engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements.
• Prepare and check designs in accordance with DMRB and other national design codes, including calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy quality, cost and programme criteria.
• Oversee the work of junior staff, taking responsibility for their outputs.
• Control budgets and manage the costs associated with deliverable production, ensuring the commercial success of projects within the portfolio.
• Liaise with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attend progress meetings and respond to queries.
• Contribute to bid preparation and the general work‑winning function.
• Drive effective health and safety practices within the team.

What You Will Bring To Us

• Developed drainage design experience and expertise within the Highways Civil Engineering field, typically gained in an Engineer role or equivalent.
• Ability to produce technically sound engineering solutions, including highways drainage, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working unsupervised and supervising junior staff.
• Experience managing health, safety and welfare on projects, including the Integrated Management System and Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.
• Capability to act as Engineering Design Lead for larger projects where required.
• Very good working knowledge of relevant software and analytical tools, particularly Causeway Flow.
• Demonstrated commercial awareness.
• Strong understanding of CDM and risk assessment; substantial experience communicating hazards and risks on projects, ensuring appropriate risk mitigation and transference. Ability to act as Principal Designer where required.
• Successful completion of the professional review or end‑point assessment, resulting in the award of Incorporated or Chartered status, or an equivalent professional licence.
• Incorporated or Chartered status, or an equivalent professional licence gained through the relevant professional institution.
