Job summary

Amey Consulting in Nottingham is recruiting a permanent Assistant Drainage Engineer for its Consulting Highways team. This hybrid role supports the design team, mentoring junior designers and leading aspects of projects while maintaining safety and quality across deliverables.

You will build hydraulic models with Causeway Flow, assist with feasibility and detailed design submissions, and ensure compliance with technical standards and client requirements, working with limited supervision and

Qualifications

• Degree Apprenticeship or employer‑led early careers development programme progressing toward Incorporated or Chartered status.
• Knowledge of drainage design processes and procedures relevant to civil engineering.
• Able to produce technically sound engineering solutions with limited supervision.
• Experience following health, safety and welfare procedures (e.g. Amey’s IMS and CDM Regulations).
• Understanding of technical and specification processes and ownership of deliverables with supervision.

Responsibilities

• Build hydraulic models using Causeway Flow and contribute to feasibility and detailed design submissions.
• Field technical queries during construction and project close out.
• Produce designs, calculations, drawings and documentation for scheme deliverables meeting quality, cost and schedule criteria.
• Mentor junior designers and support health and safety practices within the team.
• Coordinate interfaces and communicate hazards/risks across projects.

The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Assistant Drainage Engineer to join our Consulting Highways team in Nottingham. This is a hybrid opportunity, so we welcome applicants from across the region.

The role

Our Drainage Infrastructure Engineers play an important part within the Highways Design team. As an Assistant Engineer you will provide effective support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on a variety of highways drainage schemes whilst taking the lead on projects and mentoring junior designers. Responsibilities include:

• Building hydraulic models using Causeway Flow
• Preparing feasibility and detailed design submissions, fielding technical queries during the construction stage and project close out
• Working in a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions
• Preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the criteria of quality, cost and programme
• Supporting effective health and safety practices within the team

What you will bring to us

• Successful completion of a Degree Apprenticeship programme or an employer‑led early careers development programme, with a degree of progress through a programme of initial professional development leading towards Incorporated or Chartered status.
• Knowledge of drainage design processes and procedures relevant to the civil engineering discipline
• Able to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working without significant supervision and moving towards overseeing more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks
• Experienced in following procedures associated with the management of health, safety and welfare, e.g. Amey’s Integrated Management System and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations
• Has knowledge and understanding of technical and specification processes and is starting to take ownership for the production of deliverables with appropriate supervision
• Good competence with relevant software and similar analytical tools
• Has a basic understanding of CDM and risk assessment. Experienced in the management and communication of hazards and risks on projects
• Demonstrates a basic understanding of the different interfaces on projects
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an appropriate subject
