Job summary

Amey Consulting in Liverpool seeks an experienced Highways Engineer to support the Design and Development team. As a Civil Engineer, you will lead junior engineers and deliver highway projects from junction improvements to new roads and bridges.

You will work in a flexible, hybrid environment with 40-hour weeks and opportunities for development across the UK. The role emphasises client service, standards compliance, and timely delivery.

Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in highway engineering, particularly local roads and S278 layouts.
  • Commercial and customer-focused approach to achieve programme targets and income.
  • Ability to supervise junior staff and check work for accuracy.
  • Good understanding of Manual for Streets, DMRB and other national standards.
  • Knowledge of CDM regulations and their relevance to highway design.
  • Ability to prepare briefs for fee quotes for service delivery.
  • Ability to deliver on time, within budget and to the required quality.
  • Maintain awareness of industry best practice and apply it where appropriate.

National Highways, formerly Highways England, have named Amey Consulting as a Design partner to support the delivery of the largest and most comprehensive renewals programme that National Highways have ever launched. The £3.6bn Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF) enables National Highways to procure Design and Construction services across the Strategic Road Network for the next 6 years.

What you will be doing

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Highways Engineer to support our Design and Development team. As a Civil Engineer, you will support the Senior Engineer and lead junior Engineers in the design and delivery of multiple highway projects ranging from junction improvements to new roads and bridges. Responsibilities include:

  • To work in a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working unsupervised and supervising more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks.
  • The preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme. Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions.
  • Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, responding to queries etc.
  • Managing a small, locally based single discipline technical team and taking responsibility for delivery of workload.
  • Contributing to the preparation of bids and the general work winning function.
  • Working on site, either on a visiting basis or in a full time but temporary role and including out of hours working.
We want to hear from you if you have
  • Relevant experience in highway engineering, particularly local roads and S278 layouts
  • The ability to work in a commercial and customer focused way which achieves programme, meets performance targets and generates income
  • Be confident to work under minimum supervision and competent to check the work of others and supervise less experienced or junior staff
  • A good understanding of Manual for Streets, DMRB, other national standards, best practice guidance, local standards etc.
  • A good understanding of the CDM regulations and their relevance to highway design
  • The ability to support the preparation of briefs for fee quotes for delivery of services when required
  • Can deliver on time, within budget and to the quality required
  • Keep up to date with industry best practice and where appropriate apply best practice within the team
