Pearson Carter is supporting an established organisation in the United Kingdom, offering a fully remote DevOps Engineer role with an office in Scotland. You will own AWS infrastructure, automate with Terraform/Ansible, and drive CI/CD improvements while ensuring high availability and security of production systems.

The role expects 5+ years in similar spheres, strong Linux and AWS experience, and a proactive approach to capacity, resilience, and performance. UK-rights to work required.

Responsibilities

• Own and manage core AWS elements (EC2, VPC, load balancers).

• Lead IaC with Terraform and Ansible.

Senior DevOps Engineer

Pearson Carter is supporting an established organisation as it continues to strengthen and modernise its technology and infrastructure estate. Due to continued growth and investment, they are looking to appoint an experienced Senior DevOps Engineer who can take a lead role in the operation, optimisation and evolution of their production infrastructure.

This position will suit an infrastructure specialist who enjoys working across cloud platforms, Linux systems, automation, networking and deployment tooling. You will have significant ownership of the underlying environment, helping to ensure services remain highly available, secure and performant while introducing improvements that make the wider technology operation more efficient.

Working closely with development, infrastructure and other technical teams, you will help troubleshoot complex issues, automate repetitive processes and contribute to the ongoing improvement of the organisation's cloud and production capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Own and manage core elements of the AWS estate, including EC2, VPC architecture, load balancers and supporting network infrastructure.

• Provide senior-level administration and support across production Linux systems, ensuring reliability and availability for business-critical services.

• Manage and optimise a variety of application and data technologies, including nginx, Apache, Redis, MariaDB/RDS, PostgreSQL and OpenSearch/Elasticsearch.

• Take responsibility for CDN and WAF configuration and performance, working with platforms such as Akamai and Cloudflare.

• Build, maintain and improve infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code approaches, with Terraform and Ansible forming a key part of the environment.

• Help develop robust deployment and release processes, contributing to CI/CD improvements using Bitbucket Pipelines and similar technologies.

• Maintain effective monitoring and alerting across infrastructure and applications through platforms including Zabbix, AWS CloudWatch, Pingdom and New Relic.

• Lead the investigation of infrastructure incidents, identifying underlying causes and implementing solutions designed to prevent recurring problems.

• Continuously review existing infrastructure and processes to identify areas where reliability, scalability, security or efficiency can be improved.

• Create scripts, utilities and automation that reduce repetitive manual work and make day-to-day infrastructure management more efficient.

• Use Python and Bash to develop practical solutions for system administration, monitoring and operational tasks.

• Work proactively on capacity, resilience, security and performance across the wider infrastructure environment.

• Participate in a shared 24/7 out-of-hours support and on-call rota.

Experience & Technical Skills

• A minimum of 5 years' professional experience in Systems Engineering, Infrastructure, DevOps, Cloud Engineering or Senior Systems Administration.

• Strong commercial experience managing and supporting Linux-based production environments.

• Solid hands-on AWS experience, particularly with EC2, VPCs, networking and load balancing.

• Experience administering production environments incorporating technologies such as nginx, Apache, Redis, MariaDB/RDS, PostgreSQL and OpenSearch/Elasticsearch.

• Strong Infrastructure as Code experience, with proven hands-on knowledge of Terraform.

• Experience with Ansible and automated configuration management/provisioning.

• Competent with scripting and automation using Python and Bash.

• Previous experience managing or supporting CDN and WAF technologies; knowledge of Akamai would be advantageous.

• Understanding of modern CI/CD practices and practical experience with Bitbucket Pipelines or an equivalent platform.

• A proven track record of investigating live production incidents, performing root-cause analysis and delivering effective long-term fixes.

• Strong problem-solving and diagnostic skills, with the ability to work methodically through complex technical issues.

• Confident communicator who can collaborate effectively with developers, technical colleagues and wider stakeholders.

• Comfortable taking ownership of work, managing competing priorities and making sound decisions during high-pressure production incidents.

• Willingness and ability to participate in a rotating 24/7 on-call arrangement.

Salary

Salary is dependent on experience and will go up to £75k.

Location

This role is fully remote but have an office in Scotland.
