Role Overview

Laing O'Rourke is seeking a Senior Design Manager - Mechanical - Life Sciences to lead the effective delivery of design for a major Life Sciences project. The role involves managing design processes during pre-construction and on-site phases, liaising with clients, design teams, and operational staff. The position is based initially at our Dartford HQ and in London, with eventual relocation to the project site in the South East in 2027.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead pre-construction design briefing and processes.
• Coordinate design management activities, linking commercial, construction, and design teams.
• Implement collaborative design review processes to reduce risks.
• Manage design information production, control, and distribution.
• Report on design progress regularly.
• Review design information for buildability, safety, maintainability, and compliance.
• Promote innovation and align activities with company values.

Technical Capabilities

• Develop and own the design brief.
• Optimize designs for performance and manufacturability.
• Manage external consultancies and information control.

Required Skills & Experience

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or relevant construction-related qualification.
• Approximately 10 years of experience, including sector-specific and international project management.
• Contractor-side experience in design management.
