The Opportunity:

Laing O'Rourke has an opportunity for a Senior Design Manager to join a major Life Sciences project. The role will initially be based at our Dartford HQ and Design Partners in London, with eventual site work in the South East in 2027. The Senior Design Manager leads the delivery of effective design across multiple projects or a large-scale project, focusing on pre-construction design processes, liaising with clients, design teams, bid teams, and operations. They ensure collaborative design review and risk reduction during live projects.

The Senior Design Manager is a senior member of the Design Job Family and Technical Function, ensuring technical excellence, assurance, and performance from pre-project to delivery. All designers are part of our Engineering Enterprise, aiming to maximize design potential and project certainty.

What will the role look like?

• Leading pre-construction briefing and design processes.
• Managing design procedures, acting as a link between commercial, construction, and design teams.
• Implementing collaborative design review processes.
• Overseeing production, control, and distribution of design information at various stages.
• Reporting on design progress regularly.
• Ensuring design information is reviewed for buildability, safety, maintainability, compliance, and technical suitability.
• Promoting innovation in design management and practices.
• Aligning activities with the company's vision and values.

What skills & experience are we looking for?

• First degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent construction-related qualification with design experience.
• Approximately 10 years' experience, sector specialization, and international project management experience preferred.
