Senior Design Mechanical Engineer

The Role

The successful Senior Mechanical Engineer will play a key leadership role within the mechanical engineering function, supporting the development of the team while driving high‑quality design, innovation and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Mentoring and developing the mechanical engineering team
  • Managing day‑to‑day departmental workload alongside the Lead Mechanical Engineer
  • Overseeing mechanical designs, drawings and bills of materials (BOMs)
  • Ensuring all designs meet BS/IEC standards and customer specifications
  • Selecting components to meet electrical and mechanical performance requirements
  • Preparing working designs, prototypes and supporting testing activity
  • Collaborating with internal project teams and external customers
  • Driving R&D and continuous improvement of existing and future products
  • Providing technical input at contract start‑up and producing technical documentation
  • Managing resources, departmental targets and workflow processes
  • Developing component libraries and delivering internal technical training

This is a hands‑on senior role with genuine influence over product direction, engineering standards and team development.

About the Ideal Candidate
  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Proven experience in mechanical design within an industrial/manufacturing environment
  • Strong working knowledge of BS/IEC standards
  • Proficient in 2D & 3D CAD (AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks or similar)
  • Experienced in BOM creation and component selection
  • Strong technical problem‑solving and analytical skills
  • Confident managing multiple projects and deadlines
  • Natural leader with strong communication and mentoring ability
