We’re looking for a Senior Lawyer with expertise in all data protection law and privacy legislation relevant to the BBC to join our Commercial, Data Protection and Technology Legal team, based in our London W1 office. The role will report to the Legal Director, Commercial, Data Protection and Technology Legal team.
The BBC Legal Division is led by the BBC’s General Counsel and provides legal assistance & advice across the BBC. Our overall structure is like that found in private practice firms and we support on a wide range of diverse matters. Whilst this means the work can be challenging and relatively fast-paced at times, we are open to discussing agile ways of working to support our staff, where appropriate and in line with our flexible working policies.
As Senior Lawyer you’ll provide senior level, commercially aware, in-depth legal advice on all aspects of data protection and privacy legislation relevant to all activities in the BBC including its application to transactional matters. You’ll also contribute to the development of the BBC’s legal strategy in respect of data protection and privacy. You will manage your own complex legal workload independently and will be responsible for work allocation to other members of the DP legal team based on risk level and urgency. You will supervise and develop more junior members of the team.
To be successful in this role, you will be legally qualified with a minimum of 5 years PQE gained within a leading law firm or chambers and/or specialist in-house team. You will possess a strong academic background and a significant level of knowledge of and experience in the application of the UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003. Experience of the media and demonstrable understanding of the acts and regulations and their implications for the media is required.
Confident to apply high level analytical skills to evaluate legal risk, you will use sound judgement based on the facts and information available to provide accurate, timely, practical and commercially focused legal advice to a wide range of stakeholders. You will have a proven ability to provide clear and succinct guidance to support policy and be able to lead negotiations and drafting on complex data sharing matters. As an effective, articulate communicator with strong interpersonal and influencing skills, you will possess demonstrable experience of influencing key decision makers, underpinned by your resilient, pragmatic approach and ability to build and maintain effective client relationships at all levels, in a dynamic environment.
Highly organised and resilient you'll be comfortable managing a diverse workload to tight deadlines, often under pressure. You will be experienced in delivering training and presentations to a variety of audiences. You'll also need experience of supervising the work of more junior members of the team and working collaboratively alongside lawyers from other subject areas and the DPO team.
