Job summary

NHS Dumfries and Galloway invites applications for a Consultant in Acute Medicine to join the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) within the Department of Medicine at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. You will provide senior clinical leadership, oversee post-take ward rounds, and support Same Day Emergency Care pathways to optimise patient flow.

The role includes teaching junior doctors and Advanced Nurse Practitioners, contributing to MDT decision-making, and participating in audits and professional

Qualifications

• Senior medical leadership experience in acute medicine.
• Experience in supervising and guiding junior medical staff.
• Familiarity with audit and quality improvement processes.

Responsibilities

• Undertake assessment and triage of acute medical patients referred from ED or primary care to the AMU.
• Provide on-site clinical supervision and guidance to junior staff.
• Develop initial investigations and management plans aligned with society standards.
• Participate in general medical on-call rota (approx. 1:12 frequency, including 1:6 weekends).
• Collaborate with Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit to improve patient flow and discharge planning.
• Supervise and train junior medical staff and Advanced Practitioners.
• Contribute to undergraduate teaching as a clinical educator.
• Ensure clinical practice adheres to GMC guidance and reporting requirements.
• Engage in audit and quality improvement activities.
