Job summary

NHS Dumfries and Galloway is offering a Consultant Physician post in Acute Medicine at the Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. The role provides senior clinical leadership, post-take ward rounds, and support for junior doctors within the AMU and Department of Medicine.

The department values education and multidisciplinary collaboration, with opportunities to develop specialist interests such as point-of-care ultrasound and antimicrobial stewardship.

Responsibilities

• Undertake assessment and triage of acute medical patients referred from Emergency Department or Primary Care to the AMU.
• Provide on-site clinical supervision and guidance to junior medical staff.
• Establish initial investigation and management plans in line with guidelines (8 hours daytime, 14 hours overnight).
• Participate in the general medical on-call rota (approx. 1:12 frequency, including 1:6 weekends).
• Develop alternatives to inpatient admission with rapid access to diagnostic services.
• Collaborate with Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit per guidance.
• Supervise and train junior medical staff and Advanced Practitioners.
• Contribute to undergraduate teaching as a clinical educator.
• Maintain clinical practice to GMC standards and partake in audit and quality improvement.
