Join us in driving climate action, fast, and speed up the decarbonisation of steel and concrete – which combined are responsible for around 15 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions. As Senior Communications Officer, Heavy Industry, you’ll focus on growing our membership base, driving the global uptake of low-carbon steel and concrete, and using communications to help shift policies.

About the role

The Senior Communications Officer, Heavy Industry is a focused role within the Programme Communications team, vital for our mission to drive climate action, fast. The role’s key goal is to strengthen the profile of our initiatives SteelZero and ConcreteZero, the work of our Heavy Industry team and Climate Group. You will do this by creating impactful content for our communications channels, seizing opportunities, and finding creative ways to get our expert spokespeople into media.

On a day-to-day basis, you’ll immerse yourself in the workings of the Heavy Industry team and work closely with the Communications Manager, Heavy Industry Campaigns. But you’ll also work very closely with communications colleagues in our other (Energy, Transport, and Food), our Marketing Team, and comms colleagues in our international offices in New York, New Delhi, Amsterdam and China.

The role reports to the Communications Manager, Heavy Industry Campaigns.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Feed into and execute strategic and integrated communications campaigns for the Heavy Industry system, to shape the global agenda and policies around net zero steel and concrete. This includes substantial communications on our SteelZero and ConreteZero initiatives.
  • Support the international growth of our membership by working on effective external cross-channel communication campaigns, and membership communications.
  • Generate and communicate compelling press releases, stories, blogs, case studies, social media posts, briefings and thought leadership articles that promote our work, working with member companies and colleagues as appropriate.
  • Help shape Heavy Industry sessions during our key events (Climate Week NYC, Climate Group Asia Action Summit) and developing other opportunities.
  • Deliver innovative communications approaches and the right messaging, at the right time, in the most effective way to support and deliver the aims of our key initiatives to our key audiences.
  • Leverage and build the reputation of the Climate Group as a whole by implementing our brand strategy and identifying opportunities that support all our business and wider work.
  • Attend key events and support senior colleagues on the global stage where needed, building relationships with members and key industry stakeholders along the way.
  • Use your experience of working across communications channels, including media, digital, social and events.
  • Leverage the advice and support of colleagues with specialist expertise in media, events, marketing and digital communications.
  • Contribute to quality, growth and innovation in our communications activities.

About you

Essential skills and experience:

  • Excellent writer with strong communication skills, able to work at pace.
  • Experience in writing briefings, op-eds, social media posts, blogs, website content, and media and podcast briefings.
  • Experience of working with a range of different stakeholders to increase the reach of communications content.
  • Ability to work flexible hours when required to support events and announcements across international time zones.
  • Fluent in English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Campaign experience and good understanding of climate issues, and the decarbonisation of steel and concrete in particular.

You’ll be based in our London head office near Tower Bridge (SE1 2NQ), a 12-minute walk from London Bridge station and enjoy the benefits of flexible and hybrid working: 3 days in the office and 2 days from home.

The role will require occasional international travel.

This is a permanent position. The salary offered is £33,610 to £36,970 per annum, based on experience.
