UPP, the leading partner to UK universities for on-campus accommodation infrastructure, is seeking to recruit a Senior Commercial Manager to support UPP’s strategic growth plan, which aims to secure new business from existing and new Higher Education partners across the UK.
UPP is the UK’s leading provider of on-campus residential accommodation infrastructure, operating over 35,000 rooms in partnership with 15 universities. UPP has a history of innovation in campus accommodation, investing over £3.5bn over three decades, working with architects to build sustainable student accommodation meeting Passivhaus, BREEAM, and WELL standards.
The Senior Commercial Manager will lead the legal and commercial workstream on projects, collaborating with the team to achieve Preferred Bidder status on tenders and Exclusivity with universities on direct awards. The role involves working towards Financial Close on transactions.
A key aspect is to allocate risk appropriately with University Partners, Funders, Contractors, Consultants, and Suppliers, considering the interests of shareholders, the UPP group, and stakeholders. Building positive relationships within the Higher Education sector is essential to promote UPP’s reputation.
The ideal candidate has experience reviewing and negotiating commercial documentation for major construction, infrastructure, or FM projects, engaging with clients on large bids, and managing relationships effectively.
Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and influencing skills are required, along with enthusiasm and motivation for UPP’s work. Experience with multidisciplinary teams in the bid lifecycle is crucial. Experience in PFI/PPP, design-build-finance-operate projects, or the student accommodation sector is advantageous but not essential if the candidate can quickly learn the sector and contractual aspects.
The role offers a competitive six-figure salary, a performance bonus, and benefits including 29 days holiday plus bank holidays, private healthcare, pension, family leave, life assurance, training, volunteering days, and a cycle to work scheme. The position is based in London with a hybrid working policy supporting 2-3 days remote work. Regular travel and overnight stays are expected.
