Job description

Senior Clinical Fellow - Start date 1st August 2025

This a fixed term full-time appointment for 12 months to work alongside ST3+ medical and clinical oncology trainees providing acute oncology, outpatient and inpatient oncology services at NNUH.

This post is ideally suited for someone who wishes to pursue a future career in Oncology or to explore the option of oncology as a potential career choice.

This post offers a varied work pattern, with duties including cover for:

The Acute Oncology Service

Weybourne Day Unit/Radiotherapy

Middle-grade on call rota

Opportunity for clinics, teaching and professional development

Main duties of the job

The Acute Oncology Service (AOS)

AOS provides a 24/7 point of contact for all patients under the care of the Oncology Department at the NNUH. Patients may self-refer to the service or be referred via their GP's or outpatient 'hot clinics'. In-hours, medical cover of the service will be the priority of this post, as well as offering advice to other speciality colleagues and GPs in the community with support from on-call consultants.

Procedures to take place in AOS include but are not limited to abdominal paracentesis and thoracocentesis. AOS is staffed by a mix of clinical fellow/ST3+ trainee, advanced care practitioners (and trainee ACPs) and experienced nurses.

Weybourne Day Unit/Radiotherapy

The Weybourne Day Unit (WDU) is where the majority of systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) takes place at the NNUH. This post will be part of the medical cover for WDU offering advice to senior nursing staff, pre-assessment of patients attending for treatment with acute problems as well as cover for emergencies (e.g. reactions and extravasation). Radiotherapy cover is also provided, with experience being gained in the management of acute radiation toxicity.

About us

The Oncology department senior medical team consists of 15 Consultant Oncologists, 13 Clinical and 2 Medical, and a Nurse Consultant (Breast) managing a wide variety of solid tumours. The team delivers radiotherapy and systemic anti-cancer therapies to the population of Norfolk with a catchment population of ~750,000 people.

A team-based approach includes holding joint new patient clinics, ward rounds as well as collaborating in service development. A weekly oncology multidisciplinary meeting (Grand Round) is held on Thursday morning. Site-specific multidisciplinary meetings are held in a dedicated MDT room with video-links to neighbouring trusts. Neurosurgery and specialist paediatric services are provided at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge.

The Consultant Oncologists are supported by 3 senior clinical fellows (this post), and a variable number of training registrars and rotational junior doctors on the ward.

The Acute Oncology Service is based on the James Pryor Unit and is supported by nurses and Advanced Clinical Practitioners.

Site specific clinical teams are also supported by 16 Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs) who also deliver oral SACT out-patient clinics.
