Senior Clinical Fellow in Neonatology

Fixed Term - initial duration of 6-12 months (TBC).

We have posts available from September 2025 and March 2026. We run a rolling rota fully EWTD and new contract compliant (42 hours/week, max 1:3 weekends). The post would be suitable for anyone with registrar-level experience on a neonatal unit. Senior candidates who fulfil the desired criteria described in the Job Description and Person Specification would be hired on a Nodal point 4 or 5 level, depending on the level of experience demonstrated in their application and at interview and the ability to cover the specific roles described in this advert.

Main duties of the job

Registrar-level posts on the Neonatal Unit, with responsibility for the first- and second-line medical care of babies admitted to the Neonatal Unit. Role will be tailored to experience, with more junior members of the team providing direct care to babies in the different areas of the unit (ITU, HDU, SCBU, PNW, labour ward), and more senior members leading resuscitation and stabilisation at birth of the more complex patients and coordinating intensive care.

About us

The Neonatal Unit at Evelina London Children's Hospital is one of the largest level three neonatal units in London. There are over 6500 deliveries a year and around 1000 admissions to our unit. We have 20 Intensive Care, 12 High Dependency and 14 Special Care Cots.

The Centre for the Developing Brain (part of King's College London) is co-located within the Neonatal Unit offering exposure to perinatal imaging research as part of the clinical role.

Job responsibilities

We undertake all aspects of Neonatal Intensive Care including surgery, cardiology and neurology. We work in close co-operation with the paediatric specialties based at the Evelina Childrens Hospital at St Thomas. The size of both the Childrens Services and Womens Health directorates mean that the educational opportunities offered from this post are immense and you will be encouraged to continually develop and broaden your knowledge and skills base.

1. Clinical dutiesThe post holder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of services to the Guys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust to include:(a) Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required.(b) Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.To provide clinical care for inpatients in Intensive Care, Special Care, Labour Ward and Postnatal Ward. To work at an appropriate level within a 3 tier junior medical team. To develop knowledge and experience in straightforward and complex neonatal problems, including subspeciality neonatology (particularly in Newborn Cardiology and Surgery). To develop counselling skills for antenatal parents, parents of babies on NICU and bereaved parents. To develop skills for discharging planning home and towards other units. To develop skills in follow-up assessment in outpatient clinic. To develop practical skills including: neonatal resuscitation, difficult airway management, line insertion under ultrasound guidance, lung ultrasound.

Person Specification
Education/Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent primary medical qualification
  • Progress in Paediatric Training (MRCPCH or equivalent)
  • Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics
  • Newborn Life Support training or equivalent
  • Newborn Life Support instructor
  • Child protection training
  • IELTS/OET exam as per GMC requirement if non-UK trained
  • GMC registration (required before starting date)
  • POCUS Ultrasound skills training
Knowledge and Skills
  • Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement.
  • Demonstrates understanding of importance of audit, quality improvement and risk management
  • Evidence of interest and experience in teaching
  • Evidence of contribution to clinical audits, quality improvement projects or clinical risk management
Experience
  • Clinical training in paediatrics (including general paediatrics, neonatology, paediatric subspecialties
  • Previous experience in tertiary neonatal unit
  • Clinical training in tertiary level neonatology at senior level
  • Previous experience in PICU or transport
  • Previous experience in cardiac and/or surgical intensive care
Research
  • Understanding of the importance, principles and applications of clinical research
  • Evidence of academic or research achievements (e.g. degrees, prizes, awards, distinctions, publications, presentations)
  • GCP training
