Job summary

Great Ormond Street Hospital invites applications for a Senior Clinical Coder to join the Clinical Coding Department. The role involves coding inpatient and day-case activity using ICD-10 and OPCS-4, mentoring junior coders, and ensuring timely, accurate data for statutory reporting and financial flows.

You will work across specialties, supporting and guiding teams, and contribute to audits and local process improvements in line with national standards.

Qualifications

• Holds Accredited Clinical Coding Qualification or has equivalent experience
• Demonstrated medical terminology and anatomy knowledge
• Knowledge of Patient information systems
• Evidence of attendance to a Clinical Coding refresher course within the last 2 years
• Significant coding experience
• Knowledge of ICD-10 and OPCS-4
• Ability to explain the complex coding rules to all disciplines of staff including medical and clinical
• Continued professional development (CPD) anticipated or demonstrated

Responsibilities

• Review and interpret complex clinical information from patient health records and a range of clinical systems, applying knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology
• Accurately code inpatient and day case activity using ICD-10 and OPCS-4 classifications, in accordance with national and local clinical coding standards
• Ensure coded information is accurate, complete, and submitted within agreed Trust timescales
• Act as a key coding contact for designated specialties, building relationships with clinical teams and resolving complex coding queries
• Liaise with clinicians to clarify documentation to support accurate coding
• Provide guidance and support to trainee, junior and less experienced Clinical Coders, including mentoring and checking work
• Support induction of new team members and development needs
• Participate in clinical coding audits and contribute to improvements in data quality
• Support local processes and guidance in line with national standards
