Job summary

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Senior Clinical Coder to join the Clinical Coding Department in London. The role involves leading coding activities, mentoring junior staff, and ensuring accurate, timely coding of patient diagnoses and procedures across specialties.

You will review complex clinical data, translate it into ICD-10 and OPCS-4 codes, and collaborate with clinical teams to resolve documentation gaps.

Qualifications

• Senior Clinical Coders are expected to work on their own initiative to collect, collate, translate and assign codes to clinical information.
• Review and interpret complex clinical information from patient health records and a range of clinical systems, applying knowledge of medical terminology.
• Accurately code inpatient and day case activity using ICD-10 and OPCS-4 classifications, in accordance with national and local standards.
• Ensure coded information is accurate, complete, consistent and submitted within agreed Trust timescales.
• Provide guidance and support to trainee, junior and less experienced Clinical Coders, including mentoring.
• Support induction of new team members and work with the Clinical Coding Manager to identify learning and development needs.
• Participate in clinical coding audits and review findings to contribute to improvements in coding quality.
• Support the Clinical Coding Manager in developing and implementing local processes and guidance in line with national standards.

Responsibilities

• Review complex clinical information from patient records and translate it into coded formats.
• Code inpatient and day case activity using ICD-10 and OPCS-4 classifications.
• Ensure timely and accurate coded data for statutory information and financial flows.
• Be the lead coding contact for designated specialties and liaise with clinicians to clarify documentation.
• Mentor and guide trainee and junior coders; support induction and development.
