Job description

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

Arup has a proven track record in the UK water industry, delivering exciting projects for major water companies, the Environment Agency, and Natural Resources Wales. Following our recent successes in securing AMP8 framework roles with and other standalone projects, we are actively seeking to grow our senior technical leadership team to support delivery for our clients and partners. This includes AMP8 frameworks with United Utilities, Severn Trent Water, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water and Thames Water.

We are looking for an experienced Senior Civil Engineer to join our growing team, with opportunities available in Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield or Manchester. This is an excellent opportunity for a Chartered or near-Chartered Civil Engineer with strong experience in water, river and general civil engineering who is looking to take the next step in their career.

You will play a key role in leading and delivering a varied portfolio of projects for water companies, contractors, local authorities and developers, across the UK and overseas. Our projects are predominantly river and water focused but also span a wider range of civil engineering sectors.

You will be involved throughout the full project lifecycle, from concept and feasibility through design, construction, commissioning and handover, giving you the opportunity to take real ownership of projects, develop client relationships and influence project outcomes.

As a senior member of the team, you will also contribute to team leadership, mentor junior engineers and help drive improvements in how we deliver our projects, including the use of digital tools and new ways of working.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver complex water, river and civil engineering projects.
  • Manage project programmes, budgets, resources and risks from feasibility through to completion.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams and supervise, develop and mentor engineers.
  • Provide technical leadership, including design review and quality assurance.
  • Build strong working relationships with Clients, Contractors and stakeholders.
  • Develop and evaluate engineering options, delivering practical and sustainable solutions.
  • Drive digital improvements and more efficient ways of working.
  • Support tenders, proposals and business development.
  • Contribute to the wider leadership and growth of the engineering team.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for someone with a proven track record of leading and delivering complex engineering schemes, combined with strong project management, technical and interpersonal skills.

You will ideally have:

  • Chartered or near-Chartered status.
  • Strong experience delivering water and river engineering projects.
  • Proven project management and team leadership experience.
  • Excellent client and contractor liaison skills.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary projects and developing junior engineers.
  • Strong technical judgement and a practical, solutions-focused approach.
  • An interest in digital innovation and improving project delivery.

Experience in contract administration and undertaking Principal Designer duties under the CDM Regulations would be advantageous.
