Are you an experienced engineer looking to support the Scottish Government’s national objectives, whilst enabling the movement of people, goods and services across the country?

To help us deliver our responsibilities we are seeking suitably qualified and experienced applicants to fill a number of senior grade civil and highways engineering posts in the Roads Directorate including roads, bridges, operations and asset management. Successful applicants will be allocated posts that most closely appear to match their skills and experience. These are exciting and challenging roles that make a real difference to the lives of people living in Scotland, now and in the future.

The Roads Directorate is responsible for carrying out the management, maintenance and operation of the Trunk Roads & Motorways in Scotland. The Directorate is brigaded into three sections that deliver the following functions:

  • Network Maintenance
  • Operations
  • Asset Management and Procurement

The Trunk Road network comprises of around 3,700 km of road and is the largest asset Scottish Ministers own (£30 billion net gross asset value). The network is hugely diverse, ranging from the ten-lane M8 in the centre of Glasgow to single carriageway sections in the west Highlands, so there are exciting roles to suit everyone.

Responsibilities

Posts may be available for Area Managers, Project Managers and Bridge Managers. Duties will vary slightly dependant on the specific role, but main duties will include:

  • Successful candidates will be required to manage and oversee the development and delivery of trunk road maintenance schemes across Scotland, ensuring that our road or bridge assets continue to provide communities and business across the country with a safe, efficient and resilient network.
  • These important and dynamic roles, which will bring you in contact with a wide range of stakeholders including members of the public, elected officials and the press. They will also require working with a variety of experts across a range of specialisms.
  • You will play an important role in engaging with stakeholders, communities, elected members and colleagues on these matters, protecting the interests of Scottish Ministers.
  • You will be expected to develop and manage a consistent approach to project management, contract management and customer engagement to help Transport Scotland maintain its position as a leading network maintainer.
  • You will also work with operational and policy colleagues to ensure that your projects support the Scottish Government’s national objectives, key policies and needs of our customers. Key policy themes include decarbonisation, climate change adaptation, road safety and active travel.
Qualifications

You must hold a suitable degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent, and be a chartered member of an appropriate professional body and registered with the Engineering Council. For bridges, MICE or MIStructE is required.

Success profiles are specific to each job and they include the mix of skills, experience and behaviours candidates will be assessed on.

Experience in roads and transport schemes in at least two of the following:

  • Scheme appraisal & analysis
  • Scheme preparation
  • Statutory procedures
  • Procurement
  • Construction
  • Health & safety management
  • Contract management
  • Project management
  • Network operation
  • Road Safety Systems
  • Flood prevention
  • Asset Management and Maintenance
  • Development Management
