Job summary

South Gloucestershire Council is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead the Highway Developments and Implementation team, mentoring engineers and ensuring highway works meet standards. You will negotiate with developers, review submissions, and collaborate with stakeholders to deliver high-quality infrastructure.

You will guide projects from planning through delivery, manage programmes and budgets, and promote health and safety across all highway schemes.

Qualifications

• Degree-level qualification or equivalent with a recognised professional civil engineering status (Chartered/Inc. Eng).
• NVQ Level 5 in Management or equivalent leadership experience.
• Substantial post-qualification civil engineering delivery experience with complex schemes.

Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor engineers and technicians in the Highway Developments and Implementation team.
• Ensure highway works by developers meet national and local standards.
• Negotiate with developers, consultants and contractors to deliver schemes to agreed standards and legal agreements.
• Review developer submissions for compliance with standards and requirements.
