Job summary

South Gloucestershire Council is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead the Highway Developments and Implementation team in delivering high-quality highway infrastructure for new developments.

The role involves mentoring engineers, ensuring compliance with standards, negotiating with developers and stakeholders, and providing clear technical guidance to MPs, members of the public and colleagues across the council.

Qualifications

• Degree-level qualification in civil engineering or equivalent.
• Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer status.
• NVQ Level 5 in Management or equivalent knowledge.
• Significant post-qualification experience in civil engineering.
• Experience leading highways construction projects and teams.

Responsibilities

• Manage a team of engineers and technicians, mentoring and developing staff.
• Ensure highway works delivered by developers meet national and local standards.
• Negotiate and influence with developers, consultants and contractors.
• Review developer submissions for compliance with standards.
• Collaborate with council colleagues for planning approvals and related processes.
• Provide clear responses to MPs, elected members and the public.
• Promote a strong health and safety culture.
