Westinghouse Electric Company LLC is seeking a Senior CE&I Design Engineer to lead and deliver high-quality control, electrical and instrumentation designs for nuclear projects at the Preston site. You will guide the design lifecycle from concept to commissioning, ensuring compliance with safety, regulatory, and quality standards.

You will report to the Design Office Manager, mentor junior engineers, and coordinate with internal and external suppliers to meet project requirements and schedules.

Qualifications

  • Requires a BEng(Hons) in CE&I or equivalent with 2:1 or above.
  • Minimum 5 years in a design role delivering engineering solutions.
  • Certifed CompEx Unit Ex12 (IEC 60079-14).
  • Experience with BS7671, 18th Edition wiring regs.
  • Member of IET or equivalent engineering body.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a small CE&I design team and allocate work.
  • Oversee CE&I for safety instrumented systems in nuclear projects.
  • Review equipment specs, tenders and supplier submissions.
  • Check detailed designs and handover packs for quality and compliance.
  • Mentor junior CE&I designers and ensure skills development.
  • Provide oversight for external design contractors and safety scoping.
  • Ensure designs meet UKCA/CE marking and CDM 2015 requirements.
  • Oversee Hazardous Areas design and DSEAR compliance.
  • Lead design reviews and hazard management strategies.
  • Develop and manage engineering substantiation documentation.

As a Senior Control, Electrical & Instrumentation (CE&I) Design Engineer, you will lead the delivery of high-quality CE&I engineering designs that meet project, safety, regulatory, and quality requirements. Work packages may span the full design lifecycle, from concept development through detailed design to commissioning and handover.

You will report to the Design Office Manager and be located at Springfields Nuclear Licensed Site in Preston, Lancashire.

Responsibilities:
  • Experience of leading the work allocation of a small team of CE&I Designers.
  • Knowledge of the design requirements for Safety Instrumented Systems for the nuclear industry.
  • Reviewing equipment specifications, initiating tenders, and evaluating supplier submissions.
  • Review proposals for detailed design drawings and documentation, commissioning support documentation and design handover packs.
  • Review / checking of CE&I designs and guiding and mentoring junior members of the engineering team to develop their CE&I design and engineering skills.
  • Provide Intelligent Customer oversight for designs delivered by external consultancies (safety, quality, scope, compliance).
  • Ensure all design deliverables meet required standards and are fully compliant with relevant regulations.
  • Oversee designs for CE&I systems in Hazardous Areas, in accordance with the DSEAR Regulations.
  • Attendance and contribution at HAZOP reviews
  • Lead CE&I Design Reviews.
  • Overseeing the development and production of Hazard Management Strategies.
  • Oversee the production of Engineering Substantiation documentation.
Duties and Technical Responsibilities
  • Act as intelligent customer for the CE&I discipline.
  • Manage the production of CE&I drawings such as block cable diagrams and single-line diagrams instrument loop diagrams, schematics, etc.
  • Manage the production of cable calculations manually or using Amtech/Trimble.
  • Oversee the preparation and management of design governance documentation (Design Quality Plans, Design Risk Assessments, Design Reviews, etc.).
  • Maintain ownership and accountability of design intent from design through to installation and commissioning.
  • Oversee and check documentation required for UKCA / CE Marking technical files.
  • Knowledge of the requirements for Designers under the CDM Regulations.
  • Contribute to and assist with the presentation of technical solutions at design reviews, HAZOPs, and other formal assessments.
  • Provide supporting information for safety case development, including engineering substantiation.
  • Provide input for project estimates, schedules, and resource planning.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal stakeholders and external design suppliers.
  • Develop designs for small power distribution systems.
  • Oversee the specification and selection of instrumentation including designs associated with installation requirements (e.g. Instrumentation loops, instrument pipework, etc.).
  • Oversee the production of CE&I designs for modifications to process plant instrumentation and PLC-based control systems.
  • Work in accordance with design governance procedures and relevant UK regulations (e.g., CDM 2015).
  • Able to operate CE&I design software tools: AutoCAD, Amtech/Trimble, Sistema, Dialux, etc.
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering engineering design solutions within the nuclear industry.
  • Demonstrable experience with CE&I designs for Hazardous Areas in accordance with the DSEAR Regulations.
  • Demonstrable experience of CE / UKCA marking of equipment and machinery.
  • Demonstrable experience of Motion Control system design.
  • Demonstrable understanding and experience of the HAZOP process.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the CE&I aspects of a Nuclear Safety Case.
  • Completion of craft-based apprenticeship in a CE&I discipline
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a BEng(Hons) degree in a relevant CE&I discipline, grade 2:1 or above.
  • 5 years industry experience in a Design role, delivering Engineering Design solutions
  • Certified in CompEx Unit Ex12 (IEC 60079-14).
  • Experienced & qualified in BS7671, 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations.
  • Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (MIET) or equivalent professional engineering institution membership.
  • Knowledge of Human Factors in Engineering
  • Knowledge/experience of Motion Control system design.
  • Knowledge/experience of Functional Safety, Nuclear Safety & Security within the nuclear industry.
