Job summary

Lightning AI, the company behind PyTorch Lightning, seeks a Senior Software Engineer to design and scale backend systems for AI development across distributed training, workload orchestration, and developer tooling. You will partner with multiple teams to advance platform APIs and ensure scalable, reliable performance, with a hybrid work model across London, NYC, and SF.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience building scalable backend systems in Go, Python, Rust or similar.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems, APIs, and cloud-native architecture.
• Experience designing and operating production services at scale.

Responsibilities

• Design and build backend services powering AI agent orchestration and execution.
• Develop scalable APIs and platform capabilities for tool use, workflow orchestration, memory, and state management.
• Build reliable infrastructure enabling long-running, distributed AI workflows.
• Collaborate with product, research and platform teams to bring new agent capabilities into production.
• Improve platform reliability, observability, and performance as workloads scale.
• Evaluate and strengthen architecture, processes, and developer tooling.
• Maintain high software quality through testing, automation, and delivery practices.
• Mentor engineers on system design and backend engineering best practices.
