Job summary

Lightning AI, the company behind PyTorch Lightning, seeks a Research Engineer to advance post-training AI systems. You will bridge ML engineering, software engineering, and AI platforms, pushing research into scalable production.

The role emphasizes building tools, collaborating with customers, and contributing to open-source efforts across DL systems and infrastructure. The position is hybrid with in-office days required in multiple locations and remote options for some candidates; you’ll work

Qualifications

• Experience building, training, evaluating, or experimenting with deep learning models.
• Hands-on experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals and debugging skills.
• Curiosity, initiative, and ability to learn quickly across domains.
• Excellent communication and collaboration across teams.
• Comfortable in fast-moving, ambiguous environments.

Responsibilities

• Develop and post-train models and scale training workloads.
• Build tooling and platform features for researchers and developers.
• Contribute to open-source projects and collaboration.
• Work across DL systems, tooling, backend services, and infra.
• Interface with customers to translate real-world workloads into improvements.
• Prototype ideas, evaluate approaches, and ship production-quality software.
• Collaborate with research, product, and infra teams to improve UX and workflows.
• Debug complex ML and systems problems spanning multiple domains.
• Learn new tech quickly and contribute where needed.
