Job summary

Academics is seeking a compassionate SEND Teaching Assistant to support students with ASD, ADHD, SEMH, and MLD across Wirral secondary schools and specialist provisions. This flexible role covers daily supply, short-term, and longer placements in mainstream and specialist settings.

You will provide 1:1, small group, or whole-class support, help with tasks, and assist with behavior management, all while building positive relationships and ensuring a calm learning environment.

Qualifications

  • Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent certification.
  • Experience as SEND TA or in roles like Care Worker, Youth Worker, Inclusion Assistant, or Behavior Mentor.
  • Enhanced DBS on Update Service (or willingness to apply).
  • Based in or able to commute to Wirral schools.

Job description

Academics is seeking a compassionate, patient, and adaptable SEND Teaching Assistant for a variety of flexible daily supply, short-term, and long-term opportunities at supportive secondary schools and specialist provisions across The Wirral.

Role Overview & Core Impact
  • Individual Support: Provide 1:1, small group, or whole-class support to students with diverse needs, including ASD, ADHD, SEMH, and MLD.
  • Flexibility: Seamlessly step into different specialized provisions and mainstream SEND departments across The Wirral for daily, short-term, or planned long-term placements.
  • Enable Learning: Help scaffold tasks, break down instructions, and implement tailored strategies to help students access the curriculum at their own pace.
  • Positive Environment: Build strong rapport, assist with positive behavior management, and utilize de-escalation techniques to ensure a calm, safe, and nurturing learning environment.
Requirements
  • Qualifications (Desirable): A relevant Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification, Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools certificate, or relevant qualifications in Health & Social Care, Childcare, or Youth Work. Specialist SEN training (e.g., Team-Teach, Makaton, PECS, or Autism Awareness) is highly advantageous.
  • Experience: Previous experience working as a SEND Teaching Assistant, or in roles such as a Care Worker, Youth Worker, Inclusion Assistant, or Behavior Mentor supporting young people with complex needs.
  • Skills: High levels of patience, empathy, adaptability, and strong communication skills.
  • Mindset: A proactive, resilient, and caring approach to supporting vulnerable learners.
  • Compliance: An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to apply for one).
  • Location: Based in or easily able to commute to schools throughout The Wirral.
