Do you have experience supporting pupils with Autism (ASC), Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs or challenging behaviour? Axcis Education is working in partnership with a well-established alternative provision in Sherborne, Dorset, to recruit a dedicated SEND Teaching Assistant for an immediate start. This is a fantastic opportunity to work within an alternative education setting that supports pupils who may find mainstream education challenging or require additional support to re-engage with learning and develop the confidence to succeed. The school takes a relationship-led approach, guided by the values of "Believe, Achieve, Succeed", helping every pupil develop socially, emotionally and academically.

About the Role – 1:1 SEND Support

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing individualised 1:1 support for pupils with additional learning and behavioural needs.
  • Supporting children and young people with Autism (ASC), SEMH and emotional regulation difficulties.
  • Helping pupils manage challenging situations and develop positive coping strategies.
  • Encouraging engagement with learning through creative, flexible and practical activities.
  • Promoting positive behaviour, social interaction and emotional wellbeing.
  • Building consistent, trusting relationships with pupils to support their personal development.
  • Working collaboratively with teachers and other support staff to meet individual needs.
  • Encouraging independence, confidence and positive learning experiences.

An Enhanced DBS check is required, alongside satisfactory safeguarding and compliance checks.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Caring, patient and empathetic, with a genuine passion for supporting young people.
  • Experienced in working with children or young people with SEND, Autism, SEMH or behavioural needs.
  • Calm, resilient and confident when managing challenging behaviour.
  • Able to build positive relationships and establish trust with pupils.
  • Flexible, creative and proactive in adapting support to individual needs.
  • A confident communicator who enjoys working as part of a team.
  • Keen to develop their knowledge and skills through ongoing training and professional development.
Experience in any of the following settings would be particularly beneficial:
  • Alternative provision or Pupil Referral Units (PRUs).
  • Specialist SEN or SEND schools.
  • Mainstream schools supporting pupils with additional needs.
  • SEMH, Autism or behavioural support settings.
  • Residential care, youth work or similar support environments.
Why Apply?
  • Competitive daily pay of £92.63 –£97.00
  • Full-time, Monday to Friday working hours.
  • Immediate start available.
  • Full training and professional development opportunities.
  • Access to free CPD and SEND‑specific training through Axcis Education.
  • Ongoing support from a dedicated education consultant.
  • The opportunity to gain valuable experience within alternative provision and specialist SEND education.
  • A rewarding role where you can make a genuine difference to a young person's life.

If you are an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant, SEND Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant or Support Worker looking to develop your career in specialist education, we would love to hear from you.

You do not need to have worked in an alternative provision previously, but you must have the right attitude, resilience and commitment to supporting young people with additional needs.
