Job summary

Axcis Education Recruitment is seeking Learning Mentors/SEND Teaching Assistants in Plymouth to support young people with SEMH needs. You'll work in a specialist Alternative Provision, both in school and in community outreach, to help students build confidence and life skills.

Role focuses on emotional regulation, positive relationship-building, and collaborative support with professionals. Full UK driving licence mandatory; GCSEs required.

Qualifications

  • GCSE English and Maths (Grade C/4 or above) required.
  • Hold a full UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle for transporting students to outreach activities and visits.
  • Experience in roles like youth work, education or care is advantageous.

Responsibilities

Location: Plymouth • Job Type: Full-Time • Salary: £93–£100 per day • Start Date: September 2026

Are you passionate about supporting young people who need someone to believe in them? We are recruiting SEND Teaching Assistants / Behaviour Mentors to join a specialist Alternative Provision supporting children and young people with SEMH needs: trauma, anxiety and additional learning needs. This is an incredibly rewarding role where no two days are the same. You'll work closely with students both in the classroom and out in the community, helping them to build confidence, develop life skills, and overcome barriers to learning.

The Role

As a Learning Mentor, you will:

  • Build positive, trusting relationships with young people.
  • Support students both on-site and during outreach activities within the community.
  • Help students regulate emotions and manage challenging behaviours using a calm, nurturing and consistent approach.
  • Encourage engagement, confidence, independence and positive outcomes.
  • Work alongside teachers, therapists and other professionals to provide the best support for each student.
What We're Looking For

To be Successful, You Will:
  • Hold a full UK driving licence.
  • Have access to your own vehicle, as you'll be transporting students to outreach activities and educational visits.
  • Hold GCSE English and Maths (Grade C/4 or above).
  • Be resilient, patient and confident when supporting students with complex needs.
  • Be passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of vulnerable young people.
  • Have excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
