Job summary

TeacherActive Ltd is seeking a SEND Learning Support Assistant (LSA) for a specialist SEND school in Basildon, supporting children aged 3–19 with SLD, PMLD and ASD. You will work with teachers and therapists to deliver personalised learning and essential care in a nurturing environment.

You will assist with 1:1 and small-group learning, adapt activities with sensory-based approaches, and help pupils develop communication and daily living skills while safeguarding and promoting wellbeing.

Qualifications

• Experience supporting children or young people with SEND, especially SLD/PMLD.
• Willingness to provide personal care to pupils with additional needs.
• Experience supporting non-verbal pupils or those with complex communication needs.
• Understanding of PECS, Makaton or AAC devices.
• Knowledge of sensory processing difficulties and strategies.
• Moving and handling training or willingness to undertake training.
• Strong behaviour management and calm response to challenges.
• Excellent communication and ability to build positive relationships.

Responsibilities

• Provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SLD, PMLD, autism and complex needs.
• Support academic, physical, social and emotional development of ages 3–19.
• Assist teachers with engaging, differentiated and sensory-based activities.
• Support non-verbal pupils using PECS, Makaton, visuals and AAC.
• Provide personal care including toileting, feeding, and dignity.
• Assist with moving and handling using appropriate procedures.
• Support with sensory activities and individual learning plans.
• Encourage communication, independence and daily living skills.
• Collaborate with therapists to support development.
• Support EHCP targets and monitor progress.
• Encourage participation in classroom, outdoor learning and enrichment.
• Maintain safe, inclusive environment following safeguarding.
