Job summary

Randstad Education Croydon is seeking an experienced teaching assistant with SEMH/SEND experience for a supply role. You will work closely with teachers to provide targeted 1:1 and small-group support, helping students overcome emotional barriers and re-engage with learning.

The role requires GCSEs in English and Maths and a Level 2 or 3 TA qualification is desirable. You will contribute to a calm, inclusive classroom, support during lunches and trips, and report progress to teachers.

Qualifications

  • GCSEs in English and Maths at grade C/4 or higher.
  • Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification is desirable.
  • Experience with SEMH/SEND or alternative provision preferred.
  • Strong communication, empathy and resilience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small group academic and behavioural support.
  • Assist teachers with lesson prep, classroom management and activities.
  • Help create a calm, structured, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Support pupils with emotional self-control and conflict resolution using positive strategies.
  • Monitor student progress and report achievements or challenges to teaching staff.
  • Escort and support pupils during lunch breaks, physical activities and trips as required.

Job description

We are looking for an experienced teaching assistant with special educational experience to join our specialist school in Croydon on a supply basis.

Salary: £88-£93 per day // Working Hours: 8:30-4:30 Monday to Friday

In this role, you will partner with teachers to provide structured 1:1 and small group intervention, assisting students in overcoming emotional obstacles, re-engaging with their education, and establishing strong relationships within a supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide targeted academic and behavioural support to individual pupils or small groups.
  • Assist class teachers with classroom management, lesson preparation, and learning activities.
  • Help create a calm, structured, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Support pupils with emotional self-control and conflict resolution using positive behaviour strategies.
  • Monitor student progress and report achievements or challenges to teaching staff.
  • Escort and support pupils during lunch breaks, physical activities, and school trips where required.
Requirements & Qualifications
  • Qualifications: GCSEs in English and Mathematics (Grade C/4 or above, or equivalent standard). Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification is desirable.
  • Prior experience working with children or young people, preferably within an SEMH, SEND, or alternative provision environment.
  • Strong communication skills, patience, emotional resilience, and a proactive approach.
  • High levels of empathy, professionalism, and the ability to build trust with challenging or vulnerable pupils.
