Job summary

Balfor Recruitment is seeking an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEN school in Wolverhampton from September 2026. You will support pupils with SEN, ASC and SLCN, providing 1:1 and small-group assistance to access the curriculum.

The role offers a competitive daily rate of £95–£100 and flexible Full-Time or Part-Time hours. Ideal candidates will have prior SEN experience, strong communication skills and a calm, patient approach within a supportive educational setting.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience working as a SEN TA – Essential.
  • Experience working within a SEN or specialist school setting – Essential.
  • Experience supporting pupils with Autism (ASC) and/or SLCN.
  • Experience providing 1:1 SEN support.
  • Adaptability and resilience when supporting pupils with a range of individual needs.

Responsibilities

Are you an experienced and passionate SEN Teaching Assistant looking for your next opportunity in Wolverhampton? Do you have experience supporting children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN), Autism (ASC) and Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)?

Balfor Recruitment is currently recruiting for an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEN school in Wolverhampton from September 2026. This role would suit a dedicated Teaching Assistant, SEN TA, Learning Support Assistant or 1:1 Teaching Assistant with experience working in a specialist education setting.

The school supports pupils with a range of Special Educational Needs, with a particular focus on Autism (ASC) and Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN). The school provides a supportive, nurturing and therapeutic environment designed to help pupils develop academically, socially and emotionally.

The setting offers a range of specialist facilities and approaches to support pupils’ individual needs, including a sensory garden designed to enrich learning and provide opportunities for exploration, communication and connection.

As a SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and the wider school team to provide 1:1 and small-group support, helping pupils access the curriculum, develop communication and social skills, manage their emotions and build confidence and independence.

Key Responsibilities

As a SEN Teaching Assistant, your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with Special Educational Needs.
  • Supporting children and young people with Autism (ASC) and Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).
  • Helping pupils to develop their communication, social and emotional skills.
  • Supporting students with emotional regulation, resilience and positive behaviour.
  • Working closely with the class teacher and SEN staff to support individual learning needs.
  • Adapting and modifying lessons, learning resources and classroom activities to suit individual ability levels.
  • Helping pupils to access the curriculum and participate fully in classroom activities.
  • Building positive, trusting and professional relationships with pupils.
  • Acting as a consistent and supportive key adult for identified pupils.
  • Promoting positive behaviour and maintaining a calm, safe and inclusive learning environment.
  • Monitoring pupil engagement, progress and development.
  • Providing regular feedback to teachers regarding pupil progress, behaviour, engagement and any challenges.
  • Working collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, support staff and families to ensure pupils receive appropriate support.
Requirements

The successful SEN Teaching Assistant will ideally have:

  • Previous experience working as a SEN Teaching Assistant, SEN TA, Learning Support Assistant or 1:1 Teaching AssistantEssential.
  • Experience working within a SEN or specialist school settingEssential.
  • Experience supporting pupils with Autism (ASC) and/or Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).
  • Experience providing 1:1 SEN support.
  • A Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent – desirable.
  • A nurturing, patient and empathetic approach to supporting children and young people.
  • Strong behaviour management skills and the ability to remain calm and consistent under pressure.
  • Adaptability and resilience when supporting pupils with a range of individual needs.
  • Excellent communication skills when working with pupils, teachers, support staff and families.
  • A genuine passion for SEN education and helping pupils overcome barriers to learning.
