Job summary

TeacherActive is seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join a supportive specialist education setting in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, on a long-term temporary-to-permanent basis.

You will provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEND, help them access learning, tailor activities, and work towards EHCP outcomes, while building confidence, communication and independence in a safe, nurturing environment.

Qualifications

  • Experience supporting pupils with SEND.
  • 1:1 and small-group support experience.
  • Understanding of autism/ASC and other needs.
  • Patient, calm and supportive approach.
  • Ability to adapt activities to individual learning needs.
  • Understanding EHCPs and personalised targets.
  • Strong communication and teamwork.
  • Experience in a specialist school or SEND setting is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEND.
  • Support pupils in accessing classroom activities and personalised learning.
  • Work alongside the class teacher to adapt activities and resources.
  • Support individual learning targets and EHCP outcomes.
  • Help pupils develop their communication, social and independence skills.

  • Encourage engagement, confidence and positive participation in learning.
  • Maintain a calm, structured and supportive learning environment.
  • Monitor pupils progress and provide feedback to teaching staff.
  • Support pupils during transitions and throughout the school day.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists and other professionals.
  • Promote pupil safety, wellbeing and independence.
  • Follow safeguarding procedures and school policies at all times.

TeacherActive is currently seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic SEN Teaching Assistant to join a supportive specialist education setting in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, on a long-term temporary-to-permanent basis.

The setting provides specialist education and support for pupils with a range of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Pupils benefit from personalised learning, structured routines and individualised support designed to help them develop academically, socially, emotionally and independently.

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and other professionals to provide tailored support both 1:1 and within small groups. You will help pupils access learning, remain engaged in lessons and work towards their individual targets and EHCP outcomes.

You will be expected to build positive and trusting relationships with pupils, recognising that every learner will have different strengths, needs and ways of communicating. A patient, resilient and adaptable approach will be essential, particularly when supporting pupils who may experience communication difficulties, sensory needs, emotional regulation difficulties or behaviours that challenge.

Working as part of a wider multidisciplinary team, you will help create a safe, structured and nurturing learning environment where pupils are encouraged to develop their confidence, communication skills and independence.

The successful SEN Teaching Assistant will have:
  • Previous experience working with children or young people with SEND
  • Experience supporting pupils 1:1 and/or within small groups
  • An understanding of autism/ASC, communication needs, learning difficulties or complex needs
  • A patient, calm and supportive approach
  • Confidence supporting pupils with emotional regulation and behaviours that may challenge
  • The ability to adapt activities and resources to individual learning needs
  • An understanding of EHCPs and personalised learning targets
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • The ability to build positive and trusting relationships with pupils
  • A proactive and resilient approach to supporting learning
  • A strong understanding of safeguarding and pupil wellbeing
  • Previous experience within a specialist school, SEND setting, care environment or similar role is highly desirable
Key Responsibilities:
