Job description

Join Our Team as a Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant!

Salary: Grade D - £19,625.56 per annum

Hours: 32.5 hours per week, Term Time Only

Contract Type: Permanent

Are you passionate about relationships, communication, and supporting students with complex needs?

We are seeking a dedicated and resilient Teaching and Pupil Support Assistant to join our compassionate team. This role is rooted in the belief that behaviour is a form of communication, and we are committed to building relationships with children based on empathy, playfulness, acceptance, and curiosity.

If you have experience supporting students with complex SEND, including Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH), Cognition and Learning, Autistic Spectrum Conditions (ASC), and Attachment Difficulties, we want to hear from you!

The Role: Key Responsibilities

Working under the direction of Senior Staff, your duties will include:

  • 1:1 and small group support for students in accessing learning activities across the curriculum.

  • Consistently applying effective behaviour regulation strategies, guided by a trauma-informed, trauma-sensitive approach.

  • Supporting students in crisis and modelling expected behaviour.

  • Assisting with the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Provision Maps.

  • Promoting independence and rewarding student self-reliance.

  • Preparing and maintaining curriculum resources, and providing clerical/administrative support.

  • Assisting with student supervision during off-site activities.

  • Liaising with staff, parents/carers, and external professionals (e.g., educational psychologists, health/social care).

  • Providing intimate care and administering medicines to identified individuals (within safeguarding procedures).

Working Hours

You will work 32.5 hours per week during term time:

  • Monday, Thursday, Friday: 8.45am - 3.30pm

  • Tuesday: 8.45am - 4.15pm

  • Wednesday: 8.45am - 4.00pm

Please note, the school reserves the right to make changes to this pattern with extensive notice.

What You Need to Be Successful (Essential)
  • Minimum GCSE grades A - C in Maths and English, or equivalent.

  • Relevant experience supporting children with complex SEND needs, including SEMH, Cognition and Learning, ASC, and Attachment Difficulties.

  • A strong commitment to Child Protection, Health & Safety, and Confidentiality.

The Ideal Candidate (Desirable)
  • Minimum NVQ Level 3 in Supported Teaching and Learning or equivalent.

  • Patience, acceptance, curiosity, and empathy with and for the children.

  • Resilience, energy, and a solution-focused attitude.

  • Reliability, punctuality, and a strong team player ethic.

Ready to Make a Difference?

This is an incredibly rewarding role, though it requires concentration and involves emotional stress through exposure to complex pupil challenges. You will be required to act as a role model and may be required to use restrictive physical intervention as a last resort.
