This special needs school offers full time special education, care and therapeutic support to vulnerable children and young people with Education and Healthcare Plans. The school is welcoming and working with a neurodiverse population of up to 150 children aged between 4-19 with a primary diagnosis of autism or a SEMH (social, emotional, mental health) profile.

The design of the building and curriculum ensures that pupils who are different ages or have different diagnosis are able to be educated and cared for in bespoke spaces that meet their needs. Additionally, they have specialist environments within the buildings appropriate to the needs of 4-6 years olds (primary classrooms and play equipment) and post 16 pupils (‘life skills’ independent areas) that ensures the curriculum meets the needs of different identified cohorts.

As a Teaching Assistant at this school, you will work closely with students of all ages to support educational, emotional and social skills. You will work with small groups of students and may be asked to support on a 1:1 basis.

Key attributes for this role are:

  • Experience of supporting children or adults with SEN needs and/or disabilities (SEND), especially in SEMH.
  • Comfortable working with students of all ages.
  • High expectations of children's progress, attainment, and behaviour.
  • The ability to use your own initiative, focusing on solving problems.
  • Patience, empathy, and good communication skills.
  • Organisation and resourcefulness, the ability to work under pressure with good time management skills and a sense of humour.
  • An understanding of confidentiality and safeguarding.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships.
  • Emotional resilience in working with challenging behaviours and attitudes.
