Job summary

Harrow Primary School is seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to start ASAP. The role involves supporting children with special educational needs in a mainstream setting, focusing on early phonics, communication, and pre-reading development to build strong literacy foundations.

You will work 1:1 and in small groups under the EYFS Lead, providing nurturing, patient support and personal care where required. Training in Autism and literacy interventions is offered.

Qualifications

  • Experience supporting children with Autism (ASD) in EYFS or SEND settings.
  • Strong knowledge of early phonics and literacy development.

SEN Teaching Assistant Required to start ASAP

Harrow Primary School | ASAP Start

£100 - £105 per day DOE

A welcoming Harrow primary school is seeking an experienced and nurturing SEN Teaching Assistant to support children with special educational needs in their pupil pad.

This rewarding role will involve supporting children one to one in a mainstream primary school.

A key focus of the position will be supporting children with their early phonics, communication and pre-reading development, helping to build the foundations for successful literacy.

Your Role as a SEN Teaching Assistant:
  • Flexible role supporting children on a 121 basis as well as more general support in the greater classsroom.
  • Provide targeted support with early phonics and literacy, helping children develop their awareness of sounds, letters and early reading skills.
  • Personal care
  • Support phonics activities and interventions planned by the EYFS Lead, reinforcing key sounds and early reading concepts through engaging, play-based activities.
  • Help children develop phonemic awareness, listening skills, sound recognition and early blending at an appropriate level.
  • Encourage communication and language development alongside early literacy, using repetition, modelling and visual support where appropriate.
  • Adapt phonics and literacy activities to meet individual children's communication, sensory and developmental needs.
  • Use songs, rhymes, stories and practical activities to develop children's phonological awareness and enjoyment of language.
  • Support children with transitions, sensory needs, personal care and daily routines where required.
  • Work collaboratively with the EYFS Lead and other Teaching Assistants to provide a consistent and structured learning environment.
  • Encourage children's confidence, independence and engagement with learning through positive and nurturing support.
Who You Are:
  • Patient, nurturing, resilient and proactive.
  • Experienced supporting children with Autism (ASD), ideally within an EYFS, SEND or specialist setting.
  • Have a good understanding of early phonics, phonemic awareness and early reading development.
  • Confident supporting children with early literacy activities and reinforcing phonics taught by the class team.
  • Able to make learning engaging through songs, rhymes, stories, games and practical activities.
  • Confident working as part of a close-knit team and following guidance from senior staff.
  • Knowledge of visual supports and communication strategies such as PECS, Makaton or Attention Autism would be desirable.
  • Calm and consistent when supporting children who may experience communication, sensory or behavioural challenges.
  • Passionate about helping young children develop their communication, early reading skills and confidence as learners.
