Job summary

SENDhelp is recruiting a passionate and resilient SEN Teacher to join a specialist SEND setting in Milton Keynes, supporting children and young people aged 9–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

This is an exciting opportunity for an SEN Teacher who wants more than simply delivering lessons. You'll have the opportunity to build meaningful relationships, adapt learning around individual needs and help pupils who may previously have struggled within mainstream education to re-engage and succeed.

About the pupils you'll teach

As an SEN Teacher in Milton Keynes, you'll work with pupils who have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), with SEMH identified as their primary area of need.

Pupils may also have additional needs including:

• ADHD
• Speech, language and communication needs
• Mental health and emotional regulation needs
• Behaviour that can be challenging or distressed
• Gaps in education and previous difficulties engaging with learning

For these young people, progress isn't measured by academic results alone.

Building trust with an adult, remaining in a lesson, regulating an emotion or attempting something they previously avoided can all represent significant progress. As their SEN Teacher, you'll have the opportunity to recognise those achievements while maintaining ambitious expectations for their education.

Your role as an SEN Teacher

Working alongside Learning Support Assistants and the wider SEND team, you will create a structured, engaging and nurturing classroom where pupils can make meaningful academic, social and emotional progress.

Your responsibilities are likely to include:

• Planning and delivering engaging lessons adapted to pupils' individual abilities and SEND needs
• Creating an inclusive classroom environment with clear routines, expectations and boundaries
• Differentiating learning to ensure pupils can access the curriculum and experience success
• Using creative and practical approaches to re-engage pupils with education
• Working closely with Learning Support Assistants to provide effective classroom and individual support
• Supporting pupils with emotional regulation and promoting positive behaviour
• Using de-escalation and relationship-based approaches when pupils experience difficulty
• Monitoring, assessing and celebrating individual progress
• Contributing towards EHCP targets and individual support plans
• Working collaboratively with colleagues, families and external professionals
• Helping pupils develop the confidence, independence and skills they need for their next stage of education and life

What we're looking for

We're looking for an SEN Teacher who combines strong teaching practice with patience, adaptability and an understanding that behaviour is often a form of communication.

QTS or QTLS is essential, alongside experience teaching children or young people with SEND, SEMH or additional behavioural and emotional needs.

Experience within a specialist school isn't necessarily essential. Teachers coming from mainstream primary, secondary, alternative provision or PRU environments may have highly transferable experience.

You could be particularly well suited to this SEN Teacher role in Milton Keynes if you are confident with behaviour management, skilled at adapting lessons for different levels of attainment and able to build strong professional relationships with pupils who may initially be reluctant to engage.
