In response to increasing student numbers, Esland Bedford School are seeking an SEN teacher to join our growing team. The role entails planning and delivery of lessons to pupils in Key Stages 3 and 4. The role would be suitable for teachers with either primary or secondary QTS; experience of working with pupils with Anxiety, Emotionally-based School Avoidance and/or ASD would be preferred. There is no preference with regards to subject specialism, although a willingness to support in delivering PSHE would be welcomed.

Esland Bedford School is an independent SEMH special school for up to 50 children aged 8-18. The school provides education to day pupils, and via our unique Turning the Curve provision, to young people who have been disengaged from education for significant periods of time. We aim to maintain a nurturing and accepting environment for young people who have not had their needs met in other settings. Likewise, we also aim to provide a work/life balance to staff not available in larger schools.

What we are looking for:

Qualification and Experience

• Qualified Teacher Status
• Degree qualification or equivalent
• Demonstrable outcomes for pupils as a teacher
• Experience as a KS2/KS3/KS4/KS5 teacher

In exceptional circumstances applications may be considered for unqualified candidates who (a) can demonstrate a sustained track record of achieving strong outcomes for the pupils they have worked with, and (b) can demonstrate a willingness to undertake further training to attain QTS.

• Excellent knowledge of inclusion including SEMH, EAL, bilingual learners, minority ethnic achievement and equality (race, disability, and gender)
• Excellent understanding of safeguarding, especially the safety and welfare of vulnerable and disadvantaged pupils
• The ability and willingness to teach a range of subjects
• An understanding of a range of SEND needs, including SEMH and ASD
• Contribution to the educational and social development of individual pupils
• The ability to form effective relationships with young people, their families/carers and external agencies
• To ensure that young people’s views and wishes are sought and acted upon where appropriate
• To maintain an appropriate environment, and provide appropriate resources, to meet the needs of all pupils
• To liaise with other teachers and teaching assistants in the team to ensure effective deployment of resources

Key responsibilities:

• Deliver the curriculum as relevant to the age and ability group/subject/s that you teach
• Be responsible for the preparation and development of teaching materials, teaching programmes and pastoral arrangements as appropriate
• Be accountable for the attainment, progress and outcomes of pupils’ you teach
• Be aware of pupils’ capabilities, their prior knowledge and plan teaching and differentiate appropriately to build on these, demonstrating knowledge and understanding of how pupils learn
• Have a clear understanding of the pupils’ varying special educational needs and be able to use and evaluate distinctive SEND teaching approaches to engage and support them
• Use an appropriate range of observation, assessment, monitoring and recording strategies as a basis for setting challenging learning objectives for pupils of all backgrounds, abilities and dispositions, monitoring learners’ progress and levels of attainment
• To maintain up to date pupil records, including recording assessment data, maintaining accurate safeguarding records and developing effective liaison with parents and carers.
• Give pupils regular feedback, both orally and through accurate marking, and encourage pupils to respond to the feedback
• To demonstrate unconditional positive regard to pupils, utilising strategies such as PACE and Zones of Regulation in order to support pupils in managing their own behaviour over time
• To maintain the highest levels of expectation of pupils, supporting them to overcome barriers to learning
• Participate in any relevant meetings/professional development opportunities at the school, which relate to the learners, curriculum or organisation of the school including pastoral arrangements and assemblies
• Ensure that colleagues working with you are appropriately involved in supporting learning and understand the roles they are expected to fulfil
• Liaise with specialist professionals and implement specialist recommendations within the classroom.
• Work collaboratively with others to develop effective professional relationships.
• Communicate effectively with parents/carers with regard to pupils’ achievements
