Job summary

Balfor Recruitment is recruiting an SEMH Teaching Assistant for a specialist secondary school in Dorset, starting September 2026. The role focuses on 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with SEMH needs, ASC and related learning requirements.

You will work with teachers and pastoral staff to access education and nurture progress. Ideal candidates have prior SEMH/TEACHING Assistant experience, strong behaviour management, empathy and resilience, and a commitment to safeguarding.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience as SEMH Teaching Assistant or related roles is essential.
  • Experience supporting pupils with SEMH, ASC or additional educational needs.
  • Desirable qualifications include Level 2/3 Award in Teaching & Learning.
  • A degree in Psychology or Education is advantageous.
  • Ability to stay calm, patient and supportive in challenging situations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEMH needs.
  • Help students manage emotions, build resilience and social skills.
  • Adapt lessons and resources to meet individual needs with teaching staff.
  • Support implementation of IEPs, BSPs and risk assessments.
  • Maintain a calm, safe classroom and build positive relationships with pupils.
