SEMH Teaching Assistant – Pupil Referral Unit - Blackburn

  • Location: Blackburn.
  • Contract: Temp-to-perm.
  • Pay Rate: £13.75 – £14.50 per hour.
  • Hours: Full-time, term-time only.

We are currently seeking a dedicated and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a supportive team in an Alternative Provision / Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) based in Blackburn. This is a temp-to-perm opportunity, offering the chance to make a meaningful impact on the lives of young people who require specialist support.

Role Overview:
You will be working closely with students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, many of whom display challenging behaviour. Your role will involve supporting them both academically and emotionally, helping them to engage with learning and build positive relationships.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support students with SEMH needs on a 1:1 basis or in small groups.
  • Implement behaviour management strategies effectively and consistently.
  • Assist with lesson delivery and adapt materials to meet students’ individual needs.
  • Promote positive behaviour, self-esteem, and personal development.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff, therapists, and other professionals.
  • Maintain a safe and supportive learning environment.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience working with students who display challenging behaviour.
  • A calm, patient, and empathetic approach.
  • A valid DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • A genuine passion for helping vulnerable young people succeed.
