Job summary

Pertemps Education Network is recruiting an SEMH Teaching Assistant in Reading. You will work to support students with social, emotional and mental health needs, building positive relationships and assisting teachers with engaging lessons.

The role requires calmness, resilience and a proactive attitude to behaviour management within a supportive education setting. Training and ongoing development are provided.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children or young people, ideally SEMH/SEND or care setting.
  • Calm, patient and resilient when faced with challenging situations.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Empathy, understanding and genuine passion for supporting young people.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Positive and proactive approach to behaviour management.

Responsibilities

SEMH Teaching Assistant

Location: Reading, Berkshire
Salary: 22,000 - 26,000 per annum (depending on experience)
Contract: Full-Time, Permanent
Start Date: ASAP

The Role As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will:
  • Support students with social, emotional and mental health needs both in and outside of the classroom.
  • Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils.
  • Assist teachers in delivering engaging lessons and learning activities.
  • Support students in managing emotions, behaviour and social interactions.
  • Implement behaviour support strategies and intervention plans.
  • Encourage participation, independence and personal development.
  • Promote a safe, positive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Work closely with teachers, therapists, parents and external professionals to support individual student needs.
About You We are looking for someone who:
  • Has experience working with children or young people, ideally in an SEMH, SEND, alternative provision or care setting.
  • Is calm, patient and resilient when faced with challenging situations.
  • Possesses strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Demonstrates empathy, understanding and a genuine passion for supporting young people.
  • Can work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Has a positive and proactive approach to behaviour management.
Desirable Experience
  • SEMH, SEND or behavioural support experience.
  • Team Teach, CPI or other de-escalation training.
  • Experience supporting students with Autism, ADHD, trauma or attachment difficulties.
  • Youth work, mentoring, coaching or care experience.
