Job summary

Milk Education is recruiting a SEMH Teacher to join a specialist setting in Birtley, Gateshead, supporting pupils aged 11–16 with SEMH needs. The role starts January 2027 and offers a nurturing, supportive environment with small class sizes (max 6 students).

You will plan and deliver engaging, differentiated lessons, working closely with teaching assistants and pastoral staff to create a calm, positive learning environment where every learner feels safe, valued and able to progress.

Qualifications

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching qualification.
  • Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs.
  • Strong understanding of how to adapt teaching and learning to meet individual needs.
  • Patient, calm and resilient when supporting students with complex emotional and behavioural needs.
  • Confident managing behaviour and supporting students with emotional regulation.
  • Able to build positive, trusting relationships with young people.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging lessons for pupils aged 11–16 with a range of SEMH needs.
  • Adapt lessons, resources and teaching approaches to meet the individual needs and abilities of each student.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships that encourage engagement, confidence and resilience.
  • Support students with emotional regulation and promote positive behaviour strategies within the classroom.
  • Work closely with teaching assistants, pastoral staff and the wider school team to provide personalised support.
  • Monitor student progress and adapt teaching to support individual learning and development.
  • Promote a calm, safe and inclusive learning environment where every student feels respected, understood and able to succeed.
  • Encourage students to develop their independence, confidence and life skills alongside their academic learning.
