Job summary

Milk Education is seeking a committed SEMH Learning Support Assistant to support pupils with SEMH needs across our partner specialist schools near Guildford, Surrey. You will help pupils regulate emotions, build confidence, and engage with learning, both in and out of class.

Milk Education is seeking a committed, resilient, and compassionate SEMH Learning Support Assistant to join our partner specialist schools across Guildford, Surrey. You'll support pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them overcome barriers to learning, build confidence, and achieve positive outcomes both academically and personally.

About the Role

As an SEMH Learning Support Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting pupils both in and out of the classroom. You'll develop positive, trusting relationships with students, helping them regulate their emotions, improve their behaviour, and engage successfully with learning.

Working closely with teachers, SENCOs, pastoral teams, families, and external professionals, you will provide consistent, tailored support that meets each pupil's individual needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build positive, professional relationships with pupils, acting as a trusted role model.
  • Support pupils with SEMH needs using trauma-informed and restorative approaches.
  • Deliver targeted interventions to improve behaviour, emotional wellbeing, attendance, and classroom engagement.
  • Provide one-to-one and small group support during lessons.
  • Respond calmly and confidently to challenging behaviour, following school policies and behaviour strategies.
  • Contribute to behaviour support plans, risk assessments, and progress reviews.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff, safeguarding leads, parents/carers, and external agencies.
  • Promote an inclusive, safe, and nurturing learning environment.
  • Monitor, record, and report on pupil progress and behaviour.
We Are Looking For Someone Who:
  • Has experience working with children or young people with SEMH, SEND, behavioural needs, or additional needs.
  • Understands trauma-informed practice, restorative approaches, and positive behaviour support.
  • Is calm, patient, resilient, and able to remain professional in challenging situations.
  • Can build positive relationships based on trust, consistency, and respect.
  • Has excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
  • Has a genuine passion for helping vulnerable young people reach their full potential.
  • Experience working within an SEN school, specialist provision, alternative provision, or similar educational setting.
  • Team Teach, PRICE, or other positive handling training (or willingness to complete training).
  • Knowledge of safeguarding, SEND, and SEMH best practice.
  • GCSE English and Maths (Grade C/4 or above), or equivalent.
