Job summary

Disability North is seeking a caring, reliable self-employed individual to provide 12 hours per week of support in Newcastle upon Tyne (NE5). Shifts are typically 4pm–7pm, Monday to Thursday, with some flexibility. The role focuses on enabling independent living, daily tasks, and maintaining dignity and choice for the client.

Ideal candidates have experience in elder care, strong communication, and a respectful, person-centred approach. Enhanced DBS is required.

Qualifications

• Experience in health or social care is desirable.
• DBS check will be required.

Responsibilities

• Assist with daily personal care, including dressing and creams.
• Support with medication administration and reminders.

Reporting to: Self-employed role - liaising with family and PA

Location: Newcastle upon Tyne, NE5

Hours: 12 hours per week, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, approximately 4pm - 7pm. Some flexibility around shift times where possible, with consideration for your own commitments.

Rate: £18.79 per hour - self-employed basis

Job Purpose:

To help me maintain my independence and continue to enjoy life in my own home. I'd ideally like to find someone who has experience supporting older people but, more importantly, someone who appreciates that getting older doesn't mean losing your independence, personality or sense of fun!

I'm looking for someone friendly, caring and reliable to support me alongside my current small team and family. This could be a great opportunity for someone who is self-employed and looking to add a few hours to their existing commitments. Ideally, you'll be local to the NE5 area, and it would be lovely to find someone who could also offer some flexibility to cover holidays or occasional absences. Most importantly, I'm looking for someone who will be a good fit and who enjoys providing thoughtful, person-centred support.

About me:
I'm a young-at-heart lady of 89, and I take great pride in my home and in living life as independently as possible. More recently, my physical health has made getting around more difficult, and I'm now unable to walk unaided. I'm therefore looking for someone kind, caring and practical who can help me maintain my independence and continue to enjoy life in my own home.

My support needs include various aspects of my daily routine, such as application of creams, changing of clothing as well as practical help with heating and serving meals and making sure I take my medication. I'm currently supported by my two daughters, as well as a Personal Assistant and a cleaner, so you'll be joining a small team of people who know me well and are committed to helping me live independently.

From time to time, particularly when someone is on holiday or away, there may be a need for some additional care requirements, including shopping and a little light cleaning.

My daughters are wonderful and very supportive, but they both have their own health challenges, so having the right person to provide consistent and reliable support is particularly important to me.

For me, this role is about much more than practical help. It's about supporting my choices, my independence, my dignity and my pride in my home. I'm looking for someone who understands the importance of enabling me to remain in control of my own life.

The kind of person I'm looking for
Someone who is kind, caring and dependable, but also warm, friendly and easy to have around. It's important to me that we can build a good relationship based on trust, respect and good communication.

You’ll ideally be someone who:

• Is honest, reliable and punctual, with a calm and non-judgemental approach.
• Is friendly and easy to talk to and enjoys getting to know the person they are supporting.
• Is a good listener and takes the time to understand my needs, wishes and preferences.
• Has a good sense of humour and doesn't take themselves too seriously!
• Is flexible, adaptable and easy-going, and is comfortable working independently when needed.
• Is positive, encouraging and able to gently motivate me when I need a little extra help.
• Understands how important my home is to me and respects the pride I take in keeping it clean, comfortable and tidy.
• Can develop a positive relationship not only with me, but also with my family and the other important people involved in my care.
• Can adapt to a role where no two days are necessarily quite the same but gains great satisfaction from making a genuine difference to my quality of life.

What would be helpful
Being local to the NE5 area would be helpful, although it's not essential.

• Previous experience in health or social care would be desirable, although relevant personal experience of supporting an older person or family member would also be valued.
• Good communication and basic record-keeping skills.
• An understanding of the importance of confidentiality and respecting my privacy.
• Confidence with simple meal preparation.
• An understanding of the challenges that can come with ageing and how frustrating it can be when your physical abilities don't always match what you would like to do.
• The flexibility to adapt as my needs change
• An experienced driver with access to a vehicle would be useful
• An Enhanced DBS check will be required.
• As the role includes personal care, female applicants are preferred.
