Job summary

MidKent College in Gillingham is seeking a Security Officer to provide a front of house service, supervise access, and support the Facilities team in maintaining a safe, orderly campus environment. The role is 37 hours per week, year-round, reporting to the Security department.

You will perform patrols, assist with events, manage ID/badges, and participate in emergency procedures including alarms and evacuations. A vigilant, customer-conscious approach is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Work a shift pattern across the college opening hours, supporting college events including door supervision and crowd control, assisting with locking / unlocking of the site, providing a welcoming and friendly front line service to students, staff and visitors whilst maintaining access control, checking and ensuring ID’s are worn at all times by everyone.
  • Maintain high visibility and vigilance, carrying out internal and external patrols to deter and detect crime, vandalism and acts of violence against college users and assets, responding to all security related incidents, providing backup and assistance when required to other staff and assisting with College / Campus alarm, fire and emergency procedures and evacuations.
  • Direct, encourage, motivate and support students, including vulnerable students, who may present challenging behaviour, to ensure a responsive, focussed and respectful environment, which has a positive effect on student behaviour, engagement and attendance.
  • Assist all staff to ensure compliance with the student disciplinary process and manage all incidents which occur on College premises, in conjunction with the Duty Managers, Facilities Managers and Head of Facilities; contacting external services for support if deemed a requirement e.g. Police, Ambulance, Fire.
  • Assist with the investigation of incidents, including interviews, personnel or property searches and securing confiscated items, utilising CCTV monitoring, and data capture as directed by management, including reporting any faulty cameras as necessary.
  • Assist with traffic management including the monitoring of parking, access to parking and security of carparks including assisting with maintaining access during adverse weather.
  • Complete regular building checks as instructed including visual inspections of equipment, furnishings, external doors, all access points and CCTV. Reporting any repairs required to maintain the condition of the building, maintaining factual and accurate records of service activity, logging incidents on relevant IT systems and participate in handover meetings with detailed reports.
  • Assist with the training of new employees and support for agency security personnel, including security patrolling and health and safety requirements.

Description

Assist with the provision of a front of house service and presence for the College, acting as a liaison point for staff and students and working as part of the Facilities team to enforce a safe, orderly culture within a caring, disciplined and supportive environment.

This role is 37 hours a week and 52 weeks a year.

Main Responsibilities and Duties
  • Work a shift pattern across the college opening hours, supporting college events including door supervision and crowd control, assisting with locking / unlocking of the site, providing a welcoming and friendly front line service to students, staff and visitors whilst maintaining access control, checking and ensuring ID’s are worn at all times by everyone. This will include providing cover for reception/ goods in areas out of hours and during the core hours as required and to the wider facilities team as required, particularly during non-term time.
  • Maintain high visibility and vigilance, carrying out internal and external patrols to deter and detect crime, vandalism and acts of violence against college users and assets, responding to all security related incidents, providing backup and assistance when required to other staff and assisting with College / Campus alarm, fire and emergency procedures and evacuations. This will include undertaking escort duties for cash handlers and other college users as required.

In addition all post holders will be required to be trained to act as Fire Marshals and First Aiders.
